Sorry to dig up an old thread but this is not easy to come by (and this is a good thread).
I own 2 RM-593 branded by WIND Mobile in Canada, have done one official factory upgrade from ?? to 20.8.007 dated 14-06-2010. As of now, there have been no official upgrades since then. According to http://www.cpkb.org/wiki/Nokia_5230_...ckage_download , 40.8.003 has been released for AWS version (which RM-593 is an AWS version), but I don't know why WIND version hasn't got an update (and my LG Optimus 2x (P999DW) from WIND is also stuck at Android 2.2 despite T-Mobile has had 2.3 for a year now, WIND Mobile, is it you or is it the manufaturer?).
So I have been reading up on all the cfw sites out there, and got very confused as I am very new to Symbian especially S60 (only had S40 before but didn't do anything to them). I'm more comfortable w/ Windows Mobile, iOS, or even Android. But I am curious.
There are so many ports for the 5230 models, but not as many directly for the RM-593 which requires some editing so it can be flashed (and still unsure if that has any side effects?). I found C6 based, N97 Mini based, Anna based, Belle based, or just some modded ones based on original ones. What the the pros and cons for them? Would the newer ones like Anna, Belle etc be too power hungry and make less RAM and storage available, or make the phone slow? Would non original based ones have incompatibilities in apps and usages, or stability problem?
So far I am not unsatisfied w/ the ofw, but I have used up RAM in a few cases and require to reboot the phone. I don't use the phone much so it's usually a toy or a loaner, so it is not my primary or major phone. I need to make sure I can get back to some ofw in case I need to sell it though, as buyer might not like non ofw version. Since I know downgrading is either impossible or would be very bad, how do I know which ones I flash to I can get back at least 40.x back onto my 593?
So many questions, and most of the cfw sites are more into the details, assuming the readers are already knowledgeable about the rest.
And then choosing one to flash. I usually prefer factory unless it is very bad or something I must have and it doesn't / cannot have. So I'm not really eager to get cfw, but I just think it is a bit ridiculous for Nokia / WIND Mobile to leave this phone at 20.x and that's it. (So they can sell the Cx series?).
I especially am curious as to the cons on the ports, for example, it must be some cons for other platforms like C6, Anna, Belle, N97 Mini to be ported from as they came from newer, more powerful models.
Or should I just leave mine at 20.8 and use it as is? I have done Custom ROM on Windows Mobile, have jailbroken iOS devices, and have also done Custom ROM on Android devices, and am usually quite technical, but Symbian is very new to me (I have even flashed Nokia Internet Tablet 770 back when, w/ custom firmwares, but that's not a Symbian platform).
Just need some advices and guidance here. Thanks in advanced.
The rm-593 is a dead-end model. Too little fw support due to it's NA-only release.
See forum.dailymobile.se to see if anyone is still working on fw for this phone (also check phnt site). It's pretty much abandonded.
The only newer ofw out is the 40.x that I flashed - see earlier thread post.

In terms of flashing another ofw or cfw, the fw # must be identical and the rm-# supported, or it must have a newer release date. If not, you get a bricked phone only Nokia can fix, in general.

Low or out of memory, upgrade to a Belle. 603, 701, 808, etc.
Old OS and limited hw in the 5230 is the issue.
Try not to install more than opera and ovi maps. Uninstall unneeded games and apps.
I never see out of ram on the 603, and truely worth upgrading.
Thank you very much, @adorable, for your comments. I think I'll just leave it as factory 20.x then. When I get some time, I might get unofficial but factory 40.x and try that out.
I have installed quite a lot of apps but I only run a few here and there. Since I'm new to Symbian S60, I want to test out some apps just to get a feel for it. Of course they can't compare to other newer smartphone platforms, but it's still fun or even cute to see. (At least better than S40 haha).
The 5230 series is quite recent, and popular. 593 is AWS version so it is less common as it's limited to smaller carriers. Too bad it is not automatically compatible with the more popular North America (850/1900) model (is it RM-594? I think).
I have no complaints, just the free Nokia Map is worth the entrance price of this phone (which I bought at deeply discounted price as I think a store chain was clearing them out).
