How to satisfy a buyer of my iPhone 4 factory unlocked it is factory unlocked?

I was hoping someone could help me out here.

I purchased an iPhone 4 32 GB factory unlocked at the Apple Store today. I'd like to sell it and a potential buyer asked for its serial and IMEI numbers so he could verify it is factory unlocked. I was uncomfortable giving those numbers because I'm guessing he could somehow lock the phone or something--I have no idea. Can someone with those numbers do something like that?

Anyway, this brings me to the main point of this message. How can I satisfy a potential buyer of the phone that it is indeed factory unlocked, short of opening up the package and popping in their SIM card? I'd like to keep it sealed to retain value.

Now an Apple Store employee told me all iPhone 4's are factory unlocked, and it is only when Apple activates it to a carrier that they become locked. But how can I satisfy a buyer of this so they will know I am legit?

    Thanks in advance!

    Peter

@OP: Found this on another site, maybe it applies.

"If it came in a factory sealed box. Look on the bottom of the box. It will say on the requirements. Second paragraph from the top. Mine says wireless plan with ATT."

Try looking under requirements. If no specific carrier service is listed as a requirement, that might be a good indicator that it will remain unlocked. Also, I found this list of unlocked serials:

I have also googled the UPC code on the box. It will usually show up somewhere that it is sold locked or unlocked, depending on its UPC code.

It means you don't have to open the box or give out any important information.

I don't know how one would use the SN and IMEI to verify factory-unlocked status (by calling Apple perhaps). In any case, I don't see any harm in offering those numbers to a prospective buyer either.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Craze189, good call on the part number, this looks to be the way to go--the part number is MC605C/A and if you got to the Apple.ca Store (I should have mentioned I'm from Canada), the committment-free $779 iPhone 4 is this same part number.

So essentially this is proof that the phone comes contract-free, like the Apple Store employee said. And since is still sealed it has not been locked to a carrier (it is unlocked).

Does that jive with you guys? If this was you purchasing this phone, would you buy that?

EVERY iPhone in the Apple Store is unlocked.

    There's two diff microSIM's.

One is for the carrier - which is used to 'lock' the iPhone, and the second microSIM is 'No contract SIM' (I looked at my receipt, I bought one locked and one unlocked) and that second SIM is used to activate the unlocked iPhone and it'll forever remain unlocked.

    Check your receipts dude.

Thanks for the message but you misunderstood my question.

_I_ know it is unlocked (that's what I paid $800 for). But _buyers_ don't necessarily know this and for me to make a sale I have to prove it and reassure them. How to do _this_ is what I was asking about.

Give him your receipt that specially says "no contract microSIM" and let him/her match the numbers on it.

I've heard from the buyer and he said that he would use the IMEI and serial numbers to confirm they are not blacklisted by the major carriers. He is concerned because a friend of his bought an unlocked 3GS and discovered it was blocked.

Does this make sense to you guys? And can he actually do this verification by calling each network??

I don't know, US carriers don't blacklist. But again, there's no reason to withhold those numbers from a prospective buyer.

Well they lock it when they sell it unless you buy it outright, but jonty is right every phone at the Apple Store is unlocked to begin with.

They will lock it for him before he leaves the store.
