Milestone - how do I turn off any possible data use other than wifi?

I am taking my phone to the U.S., but want to use it a little bit for voice only, but I absolutely don't want it to use even 1 byte of data

is there something I can set so it won't use any data other than wifi?

Customer Service can do that for you (Data Roaming Block), but, if you check your account details, you might already have it enabled.

I think it's enabled by default.

Or you can edit your APN and give it a fake one (provided you remember your old settings).

Just log into mytelusmobilty.com or whatever, go to change rate plan, and then under services add a data block (costs $0). Just remember to take this off when you get back

except you don't need to remember ur old settings.
when u want ur old settings, just "restore default" in the same menu where you edited it.

Your phone will always prioritize a WIFI connection over 3G data, assuming it recognizes the WIFI connection you are near.

Do a search in the market for the APN on/off Widget. It does what it says and turns off your APN when you don't want to use cellular data.

Adding roaming data block from the web portal is the most flexible way. You don't have to remember to 'turn data on' once you get back or anything. If you are abroad and you do need data to be turned on for whatever reason, simply call (free) Telus customer support and ask them to enable data. I strongly recommend purchasing data travel vaucher if you do so, because roaming data could be very VERY expensive. Bug again - depends on the situation you are in.

Wifi will not be affected in any way - if you are in wifi area and wifi on phone is turned on - it will connect just fine.
