Before the 9800 was officially announced on AT&T this week many people were speculating AT&T had a 3-6 month exclusive. Nothing has been officially announced, but many people are noting how RIM said they worked closely with AT&T in developing the 9800, and many people are now speculating that it may a permanent exclusive, like the iPhone.

Looks like we'll probably be getting the 9780.

Makes no sense for RIM to develop for just one carrier. What about other carriers in Canada and around the world? They made the 9700 for every carrier. I think RIM is being foolish, if theri idea is just to emulate Apple and make the phone available to one carrier in each of many countries. Many RIM features are useful because you can communicate directly w. any BB user anywhere in the world, no matter what the carrier.

Of course a 9800 w.o. UMA wouldn't do us any good.

Oh I agree with you. RIM is giving to other carriers elsewhere, but just AT&T in U.S., at least for the time being. I think RIM's mistake here was to assume the 9800 is a carrier-switching device - that BlackBerry users that really want it will want to switch to AT&T. I don't think that's the case; the only recent carrier-switching devices I've seen are the Evo and, of course, the iPhone. Many of us (myself included) really want the 9800, but will never switch to AT&T for it, especially now with their pathetic new limited-smartphone data plans.

I'm sure the 9800 will come to T-mobile in some form or another

    Any new phones rumored?

Well -it's 8 months later. TM has had no real BB upgrade in 18 months. (I don't consider the 9780 a real upgrade - just a revised 9700.)
Any rumors on ANY new BB? We need to upgrade wife's 8900.

What does the 9780 have that the 9700 doesn't - just an improved camera?

yeah, I was on the phone with RIM support and asked that very question. Camera is the only difference plus it comes pre-loaded with blackberry os6 which I upgraded my 9700 to this week. Much improved over OS5. I hust sent back my Samsung galaxy because it doesn't perform as well for work as my blackberry. I am too waiting for a BB tmo upgrade
