Sony Xperia X10 - WIND Mobile SIM Card/Network Issue. Help Me!
When the phone is taken underground it goes from WIND home to either emergency only or Wind away which is normal, but when the phone comes back out into coverage areas it does not go back to wind home. When i try manually searching for networks, it says the SIM card is not allowed on this network (or something along those lines). I found a fix where I put the sim back into a WIND phone and manually search for the network and then put the SIM card back into my xperia. Another way around it is to turn my phone off when going underground and then turning it back on when i get out.
Obviously none of these fixes are ideal and they are not practical.
This is an unlocked xperia X10 that is AWS compatible.
Some people with Samsung Galaxy S in Calgary and BC have Wind Home / Away problem, not as nasty as yours. I, with the same phone, have no problem in GTA. So, sometimes the location can be a factor.
I had a similar issue with my Nexus one. The hack/work around below prevented the nexus one from connecting to Wind away when losing signal and reconnecting. Can't say if it will work on the SE X10i but its worth a try. Also if you will need to undo this fix when you roam.
1. Open dial pad and enter: *#*#4636#*#*
2. Select Phone Information > Set preferred network type > WCDMA Only

But that also prevents you from actually roaming on Rogers when you're outside WIND's coverage.
I had that issue also when I had my X10i. Is your phone rooted? I was thinking that the fact that I rooted mine might have caused this to happen as a side effect. After using the X10i for a while, I figured I'd much rather add a bit more money and get a Nexus One (which I am yet to get).
How is this not a hack or work around? I also pointed out in my post this needs to be undone in a roaming situation.
That's like saying using a non-default Wallpaper in Windows is a hack.
It's an option they included so that you could make the phone behave exactly in the manner you wanted. Recompiling the Android sources to not allow connections to other network types would be a hack or workaround. Enabling an included option is not.

I'm sure npannu might have moved onto another phone, but did anyone find a workaround to this issue? I'm having this very issue right now and the fix npannu mentioned in the 1st post works, but is extremely annoying.

I had a similar problem with my Rogers x10, my old sim card would work in all my phones but not in the xperia. It was the sim card I needed the newest one and it was fine. There is a post on here showing 2 wind sim cards. One has the metal foil part smaller than the other, that I believe is the newest sim, I would give that a try. IF that fails try and be in another location and see if that solves the network issue. Or its a bad handset. I know that the Sony repair depot ( Felxtronics ) will not fix the x10i so you are off to a 3rd party repair depot I fear. Who does mobili use for repairs since wind and mobilis phones are grey market?
