I am following the htc desire basically right out of the box after playing with it for a couple hours.

I am following the steps, but i hit a problem.

I do not see "DISK DRIVE" in the step:

    6. With Desire go to Settings > Connect to PC > Default connection type > Disk drive then Untick ‘Ask Me’

I ran into a problem with the rooting, I am going to try again because I think I know what went wrong but it wasn't clear in the instructions that i should be unplugging and rebooting my desire?

I Installed the Hboot per instructions and left it in. Step 2 and 11 tell me to connect my desire with no step inbetween of when to unplug it and how to reboot it. I think this is the problem because when I hit step #6, I had rebooted it with my HTC desire plugged in and i could not go to settings because it was still at the HBOOT USB PLUG thing. I tried to reboot it by going to fast boot > reboot. I still had it plugged into the computer. I went to settings and it shows Charge Only, HTC Sync and Internet as my only 3 options.

the simplest way to check.. just plug your phone in as you normally would (no debug mode).. can you immediately access your SD Card as a drive? if so, it's enabled, you need to set it to charge only.. if you cant access it immediately, then you are good to go. Sometimes its auto set, somtimes its not.. if you dont see the option and it doesnt automatically load the SD Card, dont worry about it

    Thanks mike.

I did find the disk drive after rebooting my phone. I followed the rest of the instructions but it sits at the revoked3 screen and just stays at Waiting for device.

I rechecked the Hboot thing - it is showing Android Bootloader Interface

I checked all my settings. I have uninstalled HTC Sync leaving the installer driver.

Nothing is happening with it plugged in =[

Is the phone in USB debug mode before you try to connect it? check under Settings > Applications > Developement.. Basically just turn this on and leave it on.. I used to switch it on and off when I needed it for flashing etc, but the truth is, I havent really found a problem with always having it on, other than the fact everytime you plug it in, even in Charge Only mode, it still loads the debugging drivers.

yeah I have USB debugging ticked, unknown sources ticked, disk drive mode...still no go...android bootloader interface when in Hboot mode...dunno what is not working. bootloader version is 0.83.xxx. so that's fine... tried rebooting both phone and computer and try again and still no response with the unrevoked..just waiting for device.

but it says "With Desire go to Settings > Connect to PC > Default connection type > Disk drive then Untick ‘Ask Me’"

Where does it say I should disable it? I will try it with Charge only and see how that goes...

EDIT: Still no response on charge only...

check out this thread.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=750888 its pretty straight forward and is designed for the 0.83 loader. Once you get the to the point you achieve the superuserpermissions, you can flash any rom you want

thanks again for the help mike, but it still doesn't do anything when i plug my desire in. How do I clear out the stuff I installed earlier so I can try it again from scratch?

for example, the hboot driver. I deleted the drivers folder from the Hboot instructions on the first page but it still shows the Android bootloader Interface when i put my phone in Hboot mode and connect to PC. I tried right clicking on Android Bootloader Interface > uninstall but it just reinstalls itself after it uninstalls.

EDIT: reread the forum, i'll HTC sync it back to stock and try again...

Some one made a linux distribution based on tiny core that would root your phone from there .

It's on xda I think. You can probably google them to find it.

Android us much more easier to deal with from there than Windows

I've seen that but it seems pointless (and I'm a long time Linux user since 1995), I used unrevoker and got root then left it as is since I rather wait for 2.2 OTA. But at least now i can install some apps on appbrain that requires root.

Another newbie type question, when updating a rom, do I need to run the "flash from SD: update.zip" file prior to flashing the new rom every time? I can't recall what this update.zip file is for (my friend did that part of the rooting for me) and I see it being referenced in some (but not all) tutorials. Can someone please enlighten me? Thanks!
