First, I am no way affiliated with VoIP.ms. I have simply been using their services for the last 3 months.
My experience with them has been positive overall. I believe they are a Montreal, QC based company but they have VoIP servers in a couple of locations across the world.
I have only used the London,UK server (since I am currently in Germany) and the Toronto server while in Canada.
I ported an old cell phone # to VoIP.ms from Fido without any issues. Filled in all the online forms, send a scan of the last invoice and the number was ported. VOILA !
I am using a Nokia E61 for my SIP client and it has been working flawlessly but it did require a long (about 1 hour) trial-and-error process to set up correctly and get it to register. I believe this is a result of my lack of knowledge of SIP and how the SIP client works in Symbian. Everything has been working perfectly ever since !
They offer a WEALTH of features from voice mail, call forwarding, multiple lines, Digital Receptionist (IVR), Ring Groups, etc etc. It is very likely that you won't need them...ever... except for Voicemail.
The company offers 2 routing options for outgoing calls:
Value and Premium. There is no noticeable different but occasionally calls will not go through when in the Value option. They won't even show up in the Call Details Record. For some reason, when I call, it doesn't even ring and the call ends.
I have not been able to figure out what the problem it and it has only happened about 5 times in the 220 calls I have made so far.
There is a minimum account re-charge of $25 which is kind of high considering it will take you a long long time to use it all up if you are not a very heavy user.
Can they replace my landline?? yeah possibly. The service is stable enough and works well enough.
I've been using them for a while now (maybe around a year now, I cant remember) but yeah, service is really good. I really like the DISA option - since I use my iPhone for SIP calls, 3G isnt ideal for making phonecalls over voip.
Essentially I have two phone numbers from them, 1 UK and 1 Canadian. I can dial the UK number when I'm in the UK, type in a PIN code that I've chosen and dial a number in canada through it. Equally, I can use the Canadian number for the same purpose when I'm there. I have had a few hiccups, certain numbers would fail without any error message and not show up in the logs - but those have been few and far between.
The routing option are typically on per-account bases. You are either using the Value routing or Premium routing based on the settings that you set.
If you are making an international call (calling outside of USA/Canada) there is an "override number" prefix that you can dial and pick the routing on per-call bases. Such option is not available on local calls to USA/Canada as far as I know.
I've using their service for more than 1 year now.
Their customer support is great.
They know what they are doing (unlike bell or rogers, they just want to hang up on you)
Highly recommended.
I am now using my PAP2 and E71 with it.
I love E71 E71 How to Guide
