I had a similar issue with my Milestone when I first got it. The battery wouldn't last more than 6 hours.

After reading through the help file for Milestone (right on the phone) it tells you to condition the battery by doing the following:

-fully discharge the battery every time you use it
-charge to full plus an additional 2 hours

After 3-4 days, my battery with normal use lasts at least 24 hours. I just got home and my phone has been unplugged for 11 hours and I'm at 50%. I was watching youtube on the way home and at 4pm I was at 70%.

Don't get easily discouraged, what the other poster said above here is true, you have to condition your battery.

Well the battery is finally starting to show some life, I got a toggle to kill data and did pretty much what everyone has been saying. Today was by far much better. as long as data is off the battery does not die that fast, although its still not the best. I still feel that if the screen is on, no matter what you are doing on the phone, the battery dies fast. But having said that the battery was a lot better today with data off.

When its on though, man, it just dies fast. I know watching videos, going on the net, checking twitter, facbook, ect ect, drains the battery but come on. I feel like its a waste to have such a great phone that can do so much, and yet you can't use all of it cause it kills the battery so fast, like a double edge sword. I have 6gb of data that is just going to be wasted cause the battery can't last when you use he phone as it should be used.

Its scary how you mentioned the the youtube part as I pretty much just did the same thing. battery was good on me all day so on the way home wacthed youtube videos and the battery is still over 50%, although i did not use the that much today, but still, its an improvement.

Im looking to get this phone but really concerned about battery life. Is the phone worth getting due to the battery life being so bad? And do you think the battery life is affected by installing a custom rom?

Android just isnt great for battery life. Having to turn on auto syncs and everything, thats just crap. And then you have something like larger screens and 1ghz cpus..yah thats gonna kill battery life, these arent android related, would happen on any phone running any os. Its the price you pay for wanting that stuff. I dont even want to think about dual core cpus in mobile phones which are rumoured. Battery technology needs an advancement right now.

Battery life on any similar speced phone running android will basically be about the same. Custom roms could affect battery life depending on if theyre messing around with power settings or apps running. Basically if you want a big bright screen with a fast cpu dont expect great battery life. Its just the way it is.

For those that don't like to follow links. EddieWinslow's link eventually leads to this:

The following steps should significantly extend the battery life on your phone. Please connect the phone to the charger with the phone powered on, and allow the phone to charge until the notification LED is green, indicating the device is fully charged. Disconnect the phone from the charger, and power it off. Reconnect the phone to the charger with the phone powered off, and allow the phone to charge until the notification LED is green. Disconnect the phone from the charger and power it on. Once the phone is powered completely on, power it off again and reconnect it to the charger until the notification LED is green. Disconnect the phone, power it on, and use it. You need to use this sequence only once. If the issue of battery life on our phone persists, I recommend you contact our HTC accessory department directly.

Battery management is tricky with lithium ion. Overcharge and it will explode. So the charger micro controller (built into the phone or the battery itself) will ease into a full charge over several charging cycles. Initially a reported "full" charge might only be a 1/2 or a 1/3 charged.

Has anyone managed to get a full day out of their Desire with push e-mail on and limited wifi/bluetooth use? It seems kind of dumb to me to turn off push e-mail when I'm an e-mail person. I'll definitely turn off live wall paper and maybe use a darker background. I have no issues with that.
    List of dumb posts:

Whoever told you that wifi causes battery drain is wrong.

WiFi increases battery over carrier data. It has doubled the life on my Milestone as I use WiFi at home and at work and I never turn it off.

I get 24 hours consistently for a full charge with high usage.

    I don't use bluetooth though.

I realise I don't have a Desire but WiFi is better on any device, and the data to back me up is put there.

Follow the battery calibration steps mentioned above. It definitely helped me. I leave wifi and GPS on 24/7. In a standard day I have plenty of battery left at the end of the day. I do plan on getting a car charger though so I can run navigation without worry of draining the batter.

Honestly, the best thing to do is to root your phone and flash a Froyo ROM. The day after I did that, I used my Desire (with data and all) for a total ontime of 7 hours (15 hours including ontime and sleep time). It still had 20% battery left after that.

If the custom ROM you flash has perflock disabled, you can also use SetCPU to reduce CPU usage under certain circumstances, also increasing battery life.
