You need wi-fi for facetime. I don't even think it gives you the option to do facetime if you are not connected to wi-fi

You can once you jailbreak. Works flawlessly. Me and my 3 buddies only use over 3G. You need 3G unrestricted for it and 6gbb is more than enough for a months worth. Ad long as your not crazy in love with your gf/FaceTime.

I was having the "Waiting for Activation" msg pop up. Followed the directions that are in the link above and it worked just fine. My GF and I had our first FaceTime call last night, although we were side by side in the same room. We will really test it when I go out of town for work tomorrow and not get back until Thurs night.

^tried this as well, didnt work either...

ironically the tech at fido tells me i this service is not supported by fido so they cannot help me; when i tell her that it is on fido.ca she changes her tune to tell me that i need a voice plan; then i remind her that this is a WIFI only service; then she tells me to call apple to which i say this needs to be activated by FIDO...

    wow.

Hope someone on HOFO can help me get this working...

Reset network settings and try activating it again over WIFI. I was having a lot of trouble with this, and that did the trick.

But I'm not sure you'll be able to use it without paying some pay-per-use calling charges on your data only account. If I remember correctly, the data only account has a $0 voice plan attached. Since you have to actually call someone to initiate FaceTime, the portion of the call before connecting will be charged at the standard rates.

The good news is that I've read that Apple may be implementing e-mail invitations for FaceTime to be used on the iPod Touch, so this could carry over to iPhone.

For those using facetime over 3G - make sure you have the 6GB plan, as the amount of data a facetime call uses seems to be huge. I've already used up 1.2 GB of data, and I've only had my phone since the 30th.

facetime needs to send a sms to the apple servers to register your iphone / phone number for the first time when you use facetime (switch on facetime)... once registered, your iphone should be able to do facetime without sending anymore sms.. unless you switch sims each time...

the problem with data only sims is that there is no sms function and phone number to register your iphone at apple's servers with.. therefore, you will have to wait until the new firmware is out to register with an email (supposely like the new ipod touches)...

spoke to apple tech and was told that i absolutely need SMS working on the sim; ie i cannot activate 4G serial with an SMS capable sim; and then put in the data only sim; no luck..

wonder how people in the states r doing it though?

If you're in a call and then switch to facetime are you still using minutes through your carrier or is it all over wireless at that point?

If you switch to FaceTime, it goes onto WiFi at that point. Your carrier is no longer involved and it doesn't use any carrier data.
