Both Verizon and Virgin Mobile (Sprint) has CDMA and CDMA2000 network.
If I bought Droid X, can I unlock it, and use it on Virgin Mobile? Because it is much cheaper...

As far as I know, GSM phones cannot run on a CDMA network and vice versa, I have read somewhere before that even if there is a way to unlock the phone to work with CDMA network it's going to require rooting the phone and building a ROM which is going to be very complicated. I guess you either can get the CDMA version straight or settle for a GSM carrier.
Not sure what the above post is talking about in terms of GSM. Anyways yes you can do this but not legally, as to get a phone working on Virgin Mobile, it has to be their phone. Since they will not allow outside ESN on their network you would have to clone the ESN, which is illegal.
As well you would have no idea what the settings are to make things work, so you would need to get this information from a working mobile on Virgin already.
why is fairen taking about GSM?? GSM=SIM based phones.. the Droid 1 &2 and X use CDMA
CDMA 800/1900, EVDO rev. A the same as Metro PCS, Virgin, Sprint and Verizon.. So yes. U can be able to use the Droid X w Virgin... if.. IF u are able to add the phone ESN # into Virgin's database... I wanna do that 2 for my droid 1.. anyone knows how fast is Virgin's 3G?
You cannot add a CDMA device from the US on a Canadian CDMA carrier.
Motorola Milestone on Telus
This is exactly what I want to do. But im a little hung up on the legality of changing an ESN. The only law I have found says you cant alter a phone to avoid service fees or charges. I havent found anything that says you spifically cant change an ESN. as long as you swaped the ESN of two devices so your not cloning. and/or destroyed one device. When you but a phone its your property. and you can do what ever you want to it as long as its not for monitory gain. (avoiding fees is monetary gain) that was a ruling by a judge when apple and ATT tried to say it was illegal to jailbreak an IPhone. some people say an ESN is like a VIN but its actually simular to a IP. an FCC ID and a hardware SN would be like a VIN.
At the time the law was written, the underworld was modding ESN to steal service. For all practical purposes, you would be hard pressed to find any LEO or judge that would come down on the hobbyist that pays for the device (that's not stolen) and mods it for cellular service that the hobbyist pays for.
There's all kinds of strange laws and I find it strange that they needed a new law back then when it was already illegal to break into networks (i.e. POTS).
They got an EVO to work on Boost Mobile and MetroPCS so i would imagine a Droid X can be used on Virgin Mobile…??? Legal or not, may be possible, but you will probably not get an answer on this forum, you may want to do more googling or search on craigslist for those "shops" that "flash" phones...
It's absolutely possible.
1. Get a VM Phone/Account Setup
2. Flash the VM Meid over to the X
3. Flash the VM PRL
4. Get the Username/Pass for 3g to work. Flash it in.
5. Reboot, enjoy the savings.
I have the HTC Evo, fully working on VM.
The thing with Virgin, is you need to ask someone (usually not the sales rep) over the phone or tech support because as a rule, they need or require to Load the ESN in there system (CDMA technology) in order for the phone to work on there network. Bell was a lot like that too (for there non GSM phones) when they were a CDMA only based technology. I had a Samsung Matrix Phone that I had gotten Bell to add to there ESN database which allowed me to use the cell phone. The problem I had, was that the AT&T configuration did not lend itself kindly to the Bell Mobility network (things like Network, Roaming indicator, VM alert etc) but yes, it did place, receive and allow for Call Display to work but alot of the internal features were not working.
