Interesting information regarding AWS spectrum for T-Mobile in the Gulf Coast

I found out that you can contact Eglin via their website. Here is the email exchange that I had with them.

Mr. Lewis: DoD/Eglin is fully licensed by the National Telecommunication Information Administration in this frequency range as a primary user with rights superseding that of any other user. We're both mandated and licensed by the NTIA to operate in the current frequency range until 31 March 2011. The point of contact for this issue is Thomas Tobey at 703 607-0673.

It is being reported that the Eglin Air Force Base is using outdated equipment which is operating on the 1700 Mhz band. This is affecting the ability for T-Mobile to roll out their 3G coverage to a large area of the Gulf Coast. This disrespect for the evolution of technology is a slap in the face to the people that live along the Gulf Coast. I offer you chance to defend these accusations and/or explain why Eglin is using equipment on this band. Regards, Clayton Lewis

LTE has arrived. The third carrier in Las Vegas with 10x10 LTE coverage

Coverage will expand to 100 million LTE pops for the first half of 2013, with the second half of 2013 expanding to 200 million POPs covered. Release 10 LTE (2×10, 2×20) will be better performing than all other competitors.

Thanks. That answers a lot of nagging questions. If they (the AF) are using the 1700 MHz band for telemetry along the northern Gulf, that would explain T-Mobile's huge 3G hole between Tallahassee and Slidell.

I hate reviving long lost threads, but thought this was appropriate. It seems that Columbus Air Force Base in Columbus, MS might be dragging its feet in vacating the AWS band. Through discussions with a very upper level technical support rep, he could see UMTS antenna's in Starkville, Columbus, and West Point, and the first thing that came to both of our minds was the AFB. I'm almost sure these antennas and the corresponding infrastructure have been in place for many months, nearing on a year.

Contacted CAFB and their PR claimed no knowledge of their use in these frequencies. With T-Mobile having both the A and C1 block of PCS, as well as C and D blocks of AWS, you would think they could light up UMTS band II in lieu of band IV in the mean time to give those UMTS radios some use, because they have PLENTY of PCS spectrum for this market...
