Go back to them and point out that it's listed twice for $449 AND $79 on the bestbuy.ca website, if it's advertised then they SHOULD sell it to you for full price.

Went to Best Buy yesterday. They had them in stock, but wouldnt sell them to me unless I took a 3 year contract. No Handset only sales (even though their signage and website list a Handset only price for sale).

That's lame, I am thinking of buying it outright as well at Best Buy (I have a gift card and want to use it), hopefully I don't experience the same thing.

Try this: use one of their computers in the store and navigate to the HTC Desire page which lists it for purchase for $449 and add it to the shopping cart. You will then have to choose the option of picking it up in-store and of course pick the one you are in. It will give you the option of paying when you pick it up so you can use cash, GC's or whatever if you don't want to use a credit card. Wait like 15 minutes and then go the Customer Service desk and say you have a web order for pickup and give them the confirmation number. If you have an issue still, you have a legitimate issue to take up with the manager. If you prepay with a credit card...I guarantee you walk out with the phone.

Bite me Telus.
just went on monday to a corporate telus store and got mine. best phone i have ever used...
It's a week late, but just got a call from our corporate store and was told my phone is in. They said they'll be dropping it off tomorrow morning.
Has anyone tried at a Black's? I figure they must have the same policies as a corporate store, so they should be able to let you purchase the phone outright.
I went to 2 Bestbuy in Edmonton and no one wants to sell me the Desire outright. They're only reserved to people that wants a 3-year contract :/
I went everywhere today trying to find a desire, no luck.
Best Buy, Futureshop, Blacks, Walmart and Telus Store. None of them had any stock, not even for 3yr activations. All of them had the same response when asked for an ETA, "we might be getting one or two this week."
One or two? This is pathetic... Is Telus ordering these things five at a time or something???
TELUS dealer in Scarborough on Kennedy has them.
Wee! Managed to pick one up at Black's Photography in Burlington (Appleby & Dundas)!
I went to the Telus in Oakville Place, still none. Went to the Black's next door, none, but they helped me track one down. Drove to Burlington and grabbed their last one
Totally worth it.
Looks like there hasn't been any stock for quite some time now. I tried to sign a 3 year plan with Telus but none of 10 dealers near me have stock, none of them are willing to put me on a waiting list and of course Telus themselves have no stock and no ETA. I have until the end of the 5GB bonus data offer to find this phone or I lose my (not very generous) negotiated plan.
To make matters worse, my current phone has no functioning display screen so I don't want to be waiting that long. And then there's the fact that I don't even really want the Desire - I'd much prefer a Samsung Galaxy S varient. Sigh.
