I have a Sony X10 Android 1.6 but its extremely annoying for me to keep going to:
menu->settings->wireless controls->mobile networks-> turn on/off MMS & Data
I couldn't find any built in shortcuts to paste on my wallpaper, and I'm currently using Quick Settings app, its great and even saves the same hassle of trying to see my battery percentage, which is just as a stupid design. Howver Quick Settings constantly keeps my brightness level at high rather than auto detect, even after changing it in the settings. Need some help!
I hope Android 2.1 is better designed for these two things since thats my phone's next update.![]()

3G doesn't necessarily mean data. If you mean turning on and off your APN there might be widgets out there like SwitchPro. Not sure if its 1.6 compatible.
As for switching on and off 3G as in going from 2G to 3G, I do that a lot. No widget can do it for you. They can only be shortcuts to the 2G/3G page.
Google removed the 3G on/off option in 1.6+ and I hate it. The Sense Espresso UI for the myTouch Slide has it re added but I don't know why it was removed in the first place. It's extremely useful.

Don't know anything about your Android but on my Droid X, I can go to Airplane Mode and select it and that turns off 3G for me.

A dialogue box will get populated in front of you with different options like WCDMA only, GSM only and GSM/WCDMA preferred. You have to select GSM/WCDMA preferred option.
As soon as you will select this option, 3G is turned on your android phone.
