Exclamation An unknown error occurred (3194)

    Hey everyone,

I was trying to restore my iPhone 3G to ver. 4.0 and I got the following error message. "The iPhonecould not be restored. An unknown error occurred (3194)." Before I received this error, iTunes was verifying the restore with Apple. By the way, I am not downgrading the ver. I am just simply restoring the same ver. to set it back to factory.

I have tried searching this error on google with no luck. Has anyone come across this error before? Is there a way to restore my iPhone without restoring it to ver. 4.0.2?

    Thanks!

    BB

If you haven't backed up your SHSH than you must restore to the newest version of the software or to a version lower than 4.0 (for an iPhone 3G)
Seems like it is cool to have these in your sig?

I believe that I have the SHSH saved with cydia for iOS 4.0, but I am a little confused. You said if I don't have the SHSH saved, I would have to restore to the newest version that apple has or to a version lower then 4.0 (for an iPhone 3G) I have tried to restore it iOS 3.1.3 with the following ipsw 'iPhone1,1_3.1.3_7E18_Restore.ipsw' and I get the following error, "The iPhone could not be updated because the firmware file is not compatible."

Any ideas? Also if I do have my SHSH saved, how can I restore from the SHSH?

    Thanks!

That IPSW is for the first iPhone Edge-only. Yours should say iPhone1,2[...]

HERE IS THE FIX... WORKED FOR ME

    Run notepad as Administrator
Browse here to find the host file
    C/windows/system32/drivers/etc
add this line at the end of the file
    74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
    then save this file
    restart itunes

Tiny umbrella is easier. Select the option to direct to apple's servers. Exit the program and you're set.
Google on how the edit the host file in Mac.
Thankfully, there's no stupid IE to screw up the extension of your ipsw on a Mac.

    An unknown error occurred (3194)

Just to share my experience. I did all the recommended steps mentioned, but still getting the same error. Then I noticed my anti-virus software was running. Switched it off and the update ran successfully. Doh!!

I followed all the steps and turned off my real-time protection for MSE and I'm still getting the 3194 error. I'm using the latest version of itunes (10.4.0.8).

I have an iphone 3GS with the ipad baseband installed.

I'm trying the fix above, but cannot edit eh hosts file to add the command line needed. I'm the admin for my computer, the only user, and it won't let me change the file by any means. Is there a way around this to update?

Because of your ipad baseband, you have to create a custom IPSW that preserves the baseband in order to upgrade the firmware. You can't use a stock firmware because of the ipad baseband.
    Sit vis vobiscum.
