Chinese SMS Between Bell Mobility and Other Carriers (Fido, Rogers, Oversea Carriers)

    Hi,

I'm considering to make a switch to Bell Mobility. I send/receive a lot of Chinese SMS with oversea carriers in HK and China. Does anybody know if Bell Mobility HSPA network supports Chinese SMS with Fido/Rogers as well as other carriers?

I did some searches on this forum and it looks like Telus only supports it within its own network.

    Thanks in advance.

Chinese SMS works on the HSPA network (TELUS and Bell shares their network structure). You won't able to send Chinese SMS through the old CDMA network.

umm....if both Bell and Telus shares the same network then Bell might have the same problem. See this thread for the Chinese SMS problem on Telus HSPA.

Unlike CDMA, the HSPA networks are not identical. Some areas do *not* share each others towers.
It is sad I need to state the obvious but some people just don't get it. Any posts I make are my own OPINIONS and in no way represent the views of my employer

Thanks. If anyone from Bell or Telus HSPA can test Chinese SMS with me on Fido that would be great. Please PM me.

    Vincent Leung,

    Greetings.

Under the network sharing agreement, the only thing shared by TELUS and Bell regarding the 3G+ is the Radio Access Network (RAN). Beyond that backhaul, BOTH carriers keep their own core for provisioning, billing, service options, SMS aggregators etc. It is possible because of the Multiple-Operator Core Network (MOCN) implementation.

(Actually, both have their own "separate" cdmaOne/CDMA2000 networks in their home turf, even they have got the cross-roaming agreement. However, Bell has relatively small OWN footprint in the West, not even deployed 1xEV-DO on its own - just 1x. In those areas, their subscribers are roaming on TELUS. On the other side, TELUS is also relatively sparse in the rural regions in the East. Their subscribers are roaming on Bell in those areas.)

Thanks for your detailed answer. Now if someone can post their own Bell experience that would be excellent. I have been searching for similar threads in HoFo but I haven't seen any related topics for Bell yet.

    Vincent Leung,

While I do not keep a Bell account locally, I do have an active CSL (HKG) line and able to roam either on Bell or Rogers... Chinese SMS sent to this CSL number while roaming here in Canada...

    * From a Rogers number shows up properly
    * From another CSL number over in Hong Kong shows up properly
    * From a Smartone-Vodafone number over in Hong Kong shows up properly

So Chinese SMS can come through Bell 3G+ network (but not TELUS though).
