My New Rogers Plan
- $35 Unlimited Local Calling Plan
- $30 6GB Data
- $10 Retention Value Pack - Free (2500 texts, CID, VM)
- 100 mins LD - Free
- $67 + tax
Bite me Telus.
Assuming there are unlock codes, yes it will run on 2G and 3G. If you want only 2G to save battery power you can set that up in the settings. Don't have my android phone in front of me but I think it is menu->settings->wireless->network operators->2G only
Yes it works both on 2g and 3g. Depending on the signal, it keeps switching atuomatically between E,3G and H. And yes u can force 2g mode if u like

Maybe he is located where Rogers doesn't offer 3G yet?Originally Posted by joop88
Do you have a Telus branded Desire? I have one and Telus' firmware disabled EDGE data connections. I absolutely could not get EDGE data on the phone at all while driving through New Brunswick and PEI 2 weeks ago along the Transcanada, and I thought my phone was defective or something was wrong with my account. It worked fine for GSM/2G phone calls and texts though. I also tried switching it to GSM only for EDGE data and it wouldn't work even in a 3G area.
I have since flashed my Telus Desire to an unbranded official HTC Froyo update and EDGE is now working. I deliberately drove outside the 3G area and tested EDGE and it works fine.
I hjave telus desire but I never used telus stock software. I have been using opendesire Tom since day one.
I've had the same issues as bfksc where my phone wouldn't get on EDGE. A lot of people were saying 'It should why wouldn't it' etc, without actually having a Telus Desire (stock ROM) in front of them, but it's interesting to know that I wasn't the only one having the issue.
Again, Telus = HSPA only, so it does make sense for them to disable EDGE in software
Regardless, not really an issue as any of the roms out there will make EDGE work....
But why would Telus disable EDGE for data but not for voice?
Not sure, I am just sharing my observation. It seems others were having the same issue:

Another user had a different explanation. Could be.

Works like a dream. I almost always kept it on 2G only because then I could get 3 days of battery life instead of 1 day. Turned 3G on to update my stuff or do some quick browsing.

That's a different issue. 7-11 is wap browsing via proxy only. On some android builds, the browser can't automatically pickup the WAP proxy config from the OS. There's nowhere to manually setup the WAP proxy in the browser itself so wap browsing won't work. The temporary fix is to use a browser (fennec?) where you can manually configure the WAP proxy settings.
A Desire likely would be on a proper data plan so you wouldn't need to go through a wap browsing proxy. You can go direct to the internet.com APN.
It would be the same proxy issue with both 2G or 3G as the data APNs are the same (Gorogers.com and Internet.com)
Telus wouldn't be blocking Edge since they still need the phone to be able to roam when customers are in the US (AT&T 2G/3G). There are still lots of places in the US with only edge.
You can check if 2G is enabled by going into the HTC field test menu (If it still works on the Desire). Dial *#*#4636#*#* on the phone. Go to "phone information" and scroll down to "set preferred network type". It should say "WCDMA preferred". If it's set to "WCDMA only", you wont get 2G voice or data

So is Rogers at locations where only 2G is available (as in the Thunder Bay thread). Rogers browsing under 2G uses goam.com/wapuser1/wap settings. Thus it is the same issue as 7-11 or Petro Can: an Android 2.1 device is unable to access data because proxy setting is not being read properly. This has been fixed under Android 2.2.
