Question forced data plan if I get a nokia n8?

I'm interested in getting the new nokia n8, but I don't know if AT&T will force me to buy a data plan for it. I have wifi at home and at work....I really don't need to move data over the cellular network. I just need the cellphone capability for voice calls, the rest I can use wifi for.

Does anyone here know if AT&T will force a dataplan on you if you purchase a non-AT&T branded phone?

    Wirelessly posted (iPhone 4: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A306 Safari/6531.22.7)

You should be fine since it's unbranded phone.

I doubt those will be used on atts network in any significant numbers so you should be OK. Since it is an unbranded phone. Some Google nexus one users have been caught and placed on a mandatory plan, but even they are in the minority.

N8 can use medianet just like every other Symbian unlocked device in the past 7 years.

I have the Telus HTC Desire and AT&T has not bothered me at all, mine is unlocked and had been unbranded. Still running the old $15.00 unlimited data plan!!

    On the N8? That's surprising.
My statements and opinions do not reflect those of my employer, AT&T Mobility. This is disclosed per FTC regulation.

Technically, they can require data plans due to the Terms & Conditions of Service. Some don't get caught, but they have that right if determined a customer is using a smart phone without the correct data feature.
If I'm annoyed and you're annoyed, does that make us a paranoid ??

You got put on a smartphone plan on your N8? I find that VERY hard to believe.

yes it happened to me when i put it in a N8. i'm going to try to put my sim into a dumbphone and contact att to switch it back and then see what happens when i put it back into the N8. i just need to find a working dumbphone that can download stuff well. my old phone broke on me.

my old phone was a w760 and i just stopped booting

How does the ovi store work with att? It automatically charges to your att bill? Isn't that a sign that you are using a smart phone?

Well, since it is likely that the N8 is coming to AT&T, then I can see them forcing a data plan on unbranded N8 users.
