From what I have read on HoFo all the Canadian iPhones have the same model numbers. They are locked to a carrier by IMEI at purchase. If it is unlocked at purchase a "No Contract Sim" is added to the receipt. I bought an iPhone 4 from a HoFo member and he was kind enough to send a receipt with it. That is what was on it.
Unlocked Rogers Blackberry Q10 | LG Nexus-4 | Samsung Nexus-S
Rogers SonyEricsson c510 (unlocked)
Fido iPhone 3GS 32GB (unlocked)
Carrier
Fido | Rogers | Red Pocket Mobile | T-Mobile Prepaid

I also believe that the above list is just the model numbers for the respective countries. In Canada, there are locked versions and unlocked versions unlike let's say Hong Kong where I believe that they only sell an unlocked version.
I can check with my co-worker's Canadian iPhone4 (which is locked to Rogers) but I am pretty sure that it will have the same model number as what is listed above.
Fido (monthly plan - personal/data):Novatel Wireless MC950D or Nokia CS-18
Rogers (pay as you go - Canadian prepaid): "Fido" LG Nexus-4
Rogers (monthly BIS data plan): Blackberry Q10
Red Pocket Mobile (US prepaid): Sony-Ericsson c510 or Sony-Ericsson w300i
The ones sold by the Carriers in Canada are already locked..
The ones sold in an Apple Store in Canada are locked at the time of purchase by Apple, unless you purchase the specific full priced unlocked option, then they leave it unlocked in the system.

You are absolutely correct. I picked up an unlocked iPhone and it had a no contract sim. Apple locks the phone at the point of sale if you are signing a contract/ doing a hardware upgrade.

My point is is that even those models are the same as Apple Canada sells. They are either pre-locked or locked at time of purchase. You can't tell by model numbers in Canada if it is locked or unlocked. Correct me I am wrong.
Sorry, I should have added that if you get a iPhone 4 from Rogers, Fido, etc. it will have the same model number as Apple Canada. I give credit to jonty for bringing this up earlier last month in a previous thread.

Why don't you just pay a visit to the Apple store and ask them to try it out with one of their microSIMs? I don't see why they wouldn't try it out since it doesn't cost them anything (they have the phones on display with working SIMs in them).

I was thinking a better way would be to check in Settings>Phone and look at the bottom for a listing like "Rogers iPhone Page" which denotes that a carrier radio update has been saved to the phone; previous unlocked 3GS' did not do this.
btw, mine is a HUP from Rogers MC603C - 16GB Black [not the MC603C/A - 16GB Black]. Mine I bought on Grey market from PhunkyMunky knowingly being locked. I couldn't be ANY happier. Love this phone!!

i bought one from a gentleman on kijiji tonight, and well i cut my bell sim to microsim size and its not working. it keeps saying invalid sim/ sim failure.
im not sure if this is whether the phone is locked or because my sim was cut incorrectly.
i had a telus sim card lying around too, so i cut that to size just to check. When i put that in there it worked fine and it activated fine. But my problem still isnt solved. I needed to use my iphone 4 with bell =( and the guy i purchased it from claimed that it was unlocked and will work. Now he has disappeared.....not a good day
Bell better start ensuring customer satisfaction or they'll go to #4 for new activations/customers.
The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.

Get yourself a propre microsim. It's possible that you damaged it when you cut it. You should get one at bell for around $10. Otherwise, if close to an apple store, you could ask them to verify if it's unlocked. Tell that that the one you use fails and see what they tell you.
