hi i have an iphone 4g 16gb on 02.10.04 and it from sweden,a friend send it to me as a gift, and it MC603KS,and somewere here it sais that it's factory unlock, then why can't i use it?i live in romania and have all the sim card's in my country and non of them work, why is that?can eney one pls explain?
P.S.-it was sent whidout a sim card
I am a little confused. My Verizon phone was able to roam on GSM because they used TDMA. Tell it was shutdown. The phone recognizes it as Analog. If PCS has TDMA, It could be technically be used on GSM.

As I mentioned earlier, if it doesn't take your SIM card then it's not factory-unlocked. Apple doesn't sell factory-unlocked iPhones in Sweden, so it looks like you were mislead.
Locked means you can only use it with SIM cards from one particular carrier (whichever carrier the phone is locked to), whereas unlocked means you can use it with SIM cards from any carrier.
Don't forget about Vietnam also sell factory unlocked.
In fact, all of the iphone that we sell in our store are factory unlocked, unless it is the ones people hand carry over from the states which are not factory unlocked.

Well, for MC605C and MC603C, if they were purchased factory unlocked, one of the methods to verify the lock status is to restore the phone using iTunes (don't upgrade, just restore). iTunes will show you a successful message for unlocking the phone.
If your phone was replaced by apple care, they probably would give you a refurbished phone which is in fact a different model, but it should be factory unlocked though. The only thing with refurbished phones is you can't verify factory unlock using iTunes. It will not show you the successful message for unlocking, but most likely will be unlocked as apple care knows about the original replaced phone.
I know this because I purchased my iPhone 4 (MC605C) factory unlocked, and my phone then was replaced with a refurbished phone (MC319LL) which it didn't show me the message I mentioned above when I restored the phone, but was in fact factory unlocked since I popped in another micro SIM card.

This list is completely useless, since almost all countries on that list sell both locked and unlocked iPhones - with the same model number. You cannot determine lock status by the model number, that's simply not possible.
I really hope there is some quick and easy way to tell at some point. Now that Rogers and Fido are allowing customers to unlock the iPhones (only when contract is complete or paid for at full price) for $50, there is going to be confusion caused by trying to tell if a phone is factory unlocked (or unlocked by the carrier) vs exploit unlocked.
