What kind of plan would someone have if they can get a hardware upgrade every six months on Rogers with three year pricing.

If you think WIND can work for your usage, then go with WIND. WIND is a non-option for anywhere except the biggest city's, and even then you're going to get dropped calls and spotty reception in some areas.

Also, if you call retentions and are talking about WIND, they won't offer you ANYTHING. Many people have piped in to this effect, and I've even had a rep offer to cancel my line so I could go to WIND. Come up with a better negotiating technique. $85 to be able to go anywhere in Canada and use data or call anywhere in Canada is a steal compared to WIND where you'll be paying by the minute as soon as you leave your big city. If you don't travel, then go WIND!
I understand that Rogers has the bigger better network. But it's not like you're without service when outside a Wind zone. They charge you $0.25 a minute to roam including in the US. If you are with Rogers when roaming I pay $0.35 per minute in Canada and $1.45 while in the US. So I still get charged roaming fees. The only bad thing about Wind is the data roaming is useless due to the different frequencies used in their phones (only 2g or Edge). Also texting is $0.10 a text outside your Wind zone. That is a small price to pay for such a huge difference in price. Here is a break down of cost for a Rogers plan vs the Wind plan.

    Wind $45 all in:
$200 bonus bucks if you sign before Xmas
    $29/month for the first year
$45/month after the first year for life
Let's do the math on a typical 3 year contract.
    $29x12= $348
    $45x24= $1080
    $348+$1080-$200 (signing bonus) = $1228

You can Wind Tab a HTC Amaze for $249 bucks which is a great phone.

    Rogers $85 All in:
    $85+$2.97 (regulatory fee)/month
    $87.97x36=$3166.92

$3166.92-$1228=$1938.92 savings by choosing WIND. That's crazy! Roaming is a non factor as Rogers charges to roam (on voice, granted text and data are free when roaming) as well.

Even if they would give the all in through retention's at $60
    $60x36=$2160
Savings when on Wind = $2160-$1228=$932 That's still over $900!

Just to let everyone know I do not have any affiliation with Wind what so ever. I am just a regular consumer looking for this industry to be more competitive. The only way that's going to happen is if people say no to the high price crap plans the big 3 are offering. Unless you have to have an iphone there should be no reason for a person living in a Wind zone not to switch. If you find that their service is garbage after switching you can always go back to whatever carrier you were on. You're not tied to a contract. Sure you'll have to payout your device but you can always sell it to recoup the cost. It's not like you get any perks for being a loyal customer from Rogers/Bell/Telus.

Am I wrong with this assessment? Comments are welcome. If people are using Wind thoughts on your experience are also welcome.

    Cheers

I still can't believe why people call into retentions and try to negotiate a plan using Wind. Please don't do this, as most of the time they will shut u down.

I will not start an argument about why Rogers is better than Wind. There have been numerous discussions on this subject before. If u really think Wind offers u value, please do switch. The grass is not always greener on the other side. A better quality is always better than quantity.

Good luck on ur road to break some Wind..........................

Please just switch to wind then.

fyi: your assessment is wrong - there is no roaming in Canada while on rogers. ld charges apply if you receive an incoming call outside your lca, but if you have unlimited ld then calling from anywhere in Canada to anywhere in Canada is not billed any extra. This is ofcourse impossible with wind.

Anyway, this is a retentions thread not a wind thread, if you want to further compare providers, do so in another thread.

As for your retentions negotiations, you've gotten solid advice - do not compare to or discuss wind with Rogers reps.

I'm curious, my 3-year plan with Rogers expired last month. Does this weaken my position to negotiate with retentions? Though the account has probably been a Rogers customer (wireless) for close to 10 years...it seems like the longer I've been a customer, the more expensive my plan gets...

Another question: Since I'm off any contract with Rogers with now, if I change my number into a Rogers pay as you go number, will I lose the ability to deal with retentions? Basically since I'm off contract, all my credits have expired and my phone bill is much more expensive... so I've been trying to negotiate a new 3 year plan with rogers but haven't gotten anything I'm interested in... so I need to do something with my phone in the meantime while I try to get a better deal or figure out who to port to.

    Thanks

D0n1: nothing seems to be easy with retentions right now.

    Rutager:
You won't be able to discuss a prepaid line with retentions. Usually being off contact (or preferably almost off contact is the best negotiating position.

Try, calling ret with, "I was hoping you could help me stay with Rogers." Tell them you have been looking at other providers, but would rather, "stay with what you know, since" you "have been with Rogers for a decade now." Then ask if you can just keep the plan you had before in exchange for renewing your contract.

If they won't help, thank them for their time and that you'll have to think about your options, then hang up. Cool off, then call again. Rinse and repeat until you get a rep that will help you.

Thanks Phzi, when you say cool off then call again. Is there a certain time I should wait before I call them again or did you mean right away?

I mean take a walk and relax, clear your head and get ready to charm someone else. Then go right at it. Some people suggest not calling too many times in a day, but I've seen successes on the 4th+ call in one day.

Haha, it's tough calling over and over. So far the reps have told me I'm only eligible for a 15$ credit. (Unless I had a legitimate complaint or something... was what one rep said)

I think I might just settle for this plan:
    60$ (-15$ credit)
    200 minutes /evenings 9pm - 7am
    2gb LTE data
one bonus feature (i'll choose my5 and not opt to get free incoming)

comes to 45$ +GRF and tax...
no voicemail or caller ID... I may get a 3$ text message pack to get 100 sent/unlimited received

edit: does anyone know if the 10$ voicemail, caller ID, 2000 text message retention value pack still exists?

Well the $50 unlimited calling plan was a year or two ago...that is when I signed up for that and most of my discounts. This time around I just asked if they could reduce my overall bill by $10 ($5 off each account). Wasn't asking for much, especially for signing another 3 year deal. So to answer your question, I've been working on my plan for a few years now. A little bit at a time.

Heh, yes, come up with a legitimate complaint =]. But I think that plan is great. Take it, then go slightly over on minutes first month and call back to get UNC+LD or Incoming as an extra for-free. Say, something like the rep designed the plan for you by looking at your usage and thought it would be a perfect match, but you're really worried about going over on minutes.

$10 VP with 2500 txt doesn't exist anymore.
