I love that you've dissed the device based on the fact that it lacks one feature you like, and thus it isn't a proper "business device"? Lacking a multicolor LED means it sucks at performing business tasks! Yeah! I guess that all those suits I see using an iPhone aren't using it for professional reasons and all the people I know who turn OFF the LED notification must be skateboarders and banana pickers, right?
The E7 is also a sealed unit - I CAN'T EASILY REMOVE THE BATTERY, MEANS IT'S NOT A BUSINESS DEVICE. INEFFICIENCY!

Not sure how you got screwed over working at RIM: Benefits didn't help you (if claimed), paid certification or re-imbursement to better employability after leaving? I got miffed about an interview (asked questions that clearly I wasn't qualified to answer) that I was seriously late for - but that is MY fault not RIM's; and the questions where regarding what I'd support for the position I was going for (not having the training/education in advance when I applied). Wondering what you got screwed for - and how much of it was your fault if at all.
TO be honest Nokia's LED notification light on the E71 was/is elegantly done and was VERY cool yet professional looking. I'd hope to see that on the 9700 or 9780. Nokia does need to do a little more research on why consumers prefer other devices, what those devices can do for different target markets and embrace those features, hardware implementations but not in a mashup. E7 is close and VERY powerful though.
Glad to see Oddsocks still on point. Hey what happened to Blaxxx or Greenberg?
Could be two things 1) the base IS thin and it IS conceivable at least that the AF unit would not have fit the space available (barring making the device slightly thicker); read a preview that noted that even this unit's lense is completely flush with the rest of the back which would tend to indicate that space was indeed on a premium 2) product differentiation (gone wrong, if that is the case).
Oddsocks,
No I didn't reject the device. In fact, I will be one of the first person to buy one when Nokia makes E7 available. I want a perfect device, and E7 comes close to it. But upcoming Blackberry 9780 (and current 9700) is an alternative choice, and those Blackberrys are really good choice. Colored LEDs are very very useful to know whats waiting on your phone. This is a simple technology and there is absolutely no reason not to include this feather. The only thing I can imagine is that no-one in the Nokia's internal meeting broght-up this. If that is correct then Nokia is badly managed. But, well, we already know this - and that fact generates lots of frustrations.
Let me know when it will be available and I will get one. If I find E7 something like E72 then I will move on and get a Blackberry 9780.

Actually the phone's biggest Achilles heel, as it became known today, was that it will only be initially available in Q1 of 2011, January at the earliest.
Holy cow, but is that a way to knee-cap your product. Nokia showed off the E7 one day before HTC showed off the Desires HD (and Z). One will be available in a few weeks; the other....maybe in four months???? Maybe longer? By the time it arrives, nobody's going to care or will have moved on to another product.
Wasn't that one of the issues Nokia publicly said its going to fix, or is that just what everyone hoped? I thought I remember reading it somewhere. If so then that's pretty bad move by Nokia. HTC and others have been doing short announcement to release cycles now for a while making Nokia look silly.

They're choosing to avoid launching premature firmware (ala N97). Otherwise they deal with the user complaint experience. If the hardware is decent, will they get any more credit from the disgruntled former fanboys? Doubtful!

Rogerpodacted, what they said was they are planning to use shorter announcements to release cycles _more_, but not exclusively - i.e. that they might do longer ones for strategic or tactical reasons. The N8 announcement was, I guess, an example of the latter. It just that it got delayed more than anticipated that screwed that plan up.![]()
Eh, with the N8, the announcement came after Eldar's scathing 'leak' (despite his less acrimonious prediction of exactly what the N8 would be in the N900 preview a few months earlier before his relationship with Nokia soured).
