Unfortunately ROMs are tied to radio firmware. For example I am very impressed by a CyanogenMod based ROM called CM-Minimou, which is a stripped down version of CM6. It has worked flawlessly for me for almost a month now, without any issues or Force Closes, other than the Angry Bird Beta does not work on it. However, it is build for the old radio version (3.22), though it will work with some issues with 6.35. I am not sure if there are any 2.2 based ROMs for the Magic that are specifically built for the latest radio Rogers introduced.

To run a custom ROM you really want 3 things (a compatible radio version, an engineering SPL, and a custom Recovery ROM). The radio version is fairly straight forward to change. The recovery ROM is not bad either. You can brick your phone if you mess up the SPL so I always try and avoid being a trail blazer there. Best solution is to look on xda and find a detailed how-to thread that applies to your particular build/configuration.

You certainly can revert to an older radio. Links are included in the install instructions for the ROM...

I was wondering the same thing as the original question, instead of running a specific rom though, the app Apps2SD, should just run on a rooted phone though, correct? No specific rom is needed, just root, I think?

You may also need BusyBox (collection of Unix tools) which is not included in the standard ROMS. You can install it from the market. You will also need to partition your SD card as you need a second EXT2 formatted partition to move the apps to. The stock setup has the entire SD card as one partition, formatted as FAT or FAT32.

    Take a look at: http://code.google.com/p/android-roms/wiki/A2SD and http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Apps2SD

As easier method might be to load an alternate Recovery ROM, which has support for Apps2SD. I know for sure that Amon_RA's most excellent Recovery ROMs have it built in. Most also have NAND backup and restore functionality, which is a must if you are going to be messing around with the phone.

I found that reseting the phone helped battery life. It also cleared up a lot of used memory. Give that a try before trying to root.
