    Unlimited Data/Text ?

Switched from ATT/iphone (horrible service) to vzw, phones (samsung fantastic, droid x) should be here today. I have a question...

on AT&T I had 3 lines so I got the family txt thing added since I was the only one with unlimited data plan, I have since dropped one of the lines so now I'm just going to have these 2 smartphones with unlimited data packages...do I still need to pay for text/multimedia messaging on an unlimited data plan? would seem like your paying twice for something, no? thanks.

Text is considered different from data. If you want unlimited text on all your family lines, that's $30 a month. Or you can purchase individual "buckets" of data for each line. If you are getting a corporate discount on your plan, then the discount would apply to the unlimited text feature as well, as the price of the feature is "bundled" into the price of the plan.

different "form" of data? they should just continue splitting hairs and charge for picture messages separately from text messages, separately from video messages...guess I'll get my money's worth from tethering. $45 ($90 for 2 phones) a month for internet/txt, that's crazy I pay less for high speed cable internet. Thanks for the info though. Hopefully the signal is better than ATT, that was just horrendous with the failed calls, "could not activate cellular data network", no bars, failed txt messages, calls that went straight to voicemail which many were for overtime at work, each one of those cost me $348... anything has to be better than that.

Calls are transmitted digitally so that should probably be included with your unlimited data too eh? Anything else you want for free? Sounds like you're already planning on stealing tethering service too so it's not much of a surprise.

With a smartphone you can send messages, pictures, and video by email, which is included in the unlimited data. Most carriers have an email to SMS gateway so it is just a matter of setting up a different address for your friends.

And on Verizon, when you see signal bars on your phone you can be quite confident that the call will go through.

Unless I'm mistaken, every single carrier, both post paid and prepaid, treats text messaging as a different "form" of data from web.

If you are going to argue the approach that data from text messages are the same as data from web access, then that would be contrary to all those people who are arguing that they want 3G multimedia phones because it has a QWERTY keypad, but don't want mandatory data because all they do is text message and they don't use the internet. Can't have it both ways. I'm sure if Verizon could get away with treating text messaging as "data", that would be a boon to their bottom line. Imagine sending or receiving 1 text message without a data plan (pay as you go) and them billing you $1.99 for the minimum 1 MB of data.

Texting is seperate -- it is carried over the cell phone network's control channel. Which is actually a pretty limited resource -- it usually only runs at about 4800 bits per second or possibly 9600 (9600 is faster but has a higher chance a message is lost and has to be retransmitted.) If you want to save cash, there's prepaid carriers that have very cheap unlimited plans; Verizon at least reinvests a lot of their cash in network improvements and pretty good discounts on phones.

Is there a true unlimited plan with Verizon with Talk, Text and MiFi (not web) for basic phones? I need to up my 5 gigs of data for my PC and always come close to the limit with my talk. Don't have text at present, but could learn easily enough. Also, what is the difference between "web" and "Internet"? I thought they were the same, but apparently not. I am new here, so if I am in the wrong forum or thread, please give me direction. Thank you.
