The review doesn't match the score they give it, that much is for sure. They seem generally quite positive throughout the review, then they turn a 180 at the conclusion and drop a 5/10 score out of nowhere. Yeah there are some issues, but they didn't seem to raise any grave concerns until it came time to render a score.
The review reads like a 7 but the score is a 5. Guess it is Engadget, after all.

I am surprised they didn't know that Ovi Maps 3.06 albeit in beta has pinch and zoom?

Would a user that just got his phone and doesn't read about things online know about nokia beta labs though? They have some interesting software but they need to make an on-device portal at the very least.

Do Symbian s60 3rd and 5th edition apps work on this phone? Is it backwards compatible with exisiting apps, or would we have to wait for new S^3 versions?

Yeah that was my thought exactly. In fact I didn't notice the score till I read the comments and was surprised it was so low. Still the content of the review was pretty positive and the N8 got a good review from CNET as well. Overall it's exactly what everyone expected: great hardware handicapped by an average OS. I have played with it a bit and that was my impression too. Overall it seems a pretty decent device and if it ran Android 2.2 I would probably buy it.
Actually I wouldn't be surprised if the N8 sells pretty well anyway. There are lots of people who want good hardware without really needing lots of applications or a cutting-edge OS. For them the N8 could be a great device especially if they want a good camera.

Is it the blogger's fault for not knowing about it or Nokia's fault for not promoting these things at all? I myself wasn't even aware that there was a beta of ovi maps with pinch-zoom until someone in this thread posted about it and I keep somewhat up to date with things. I was expecting the N8 to ship with it per some comments on another board.
Which can be said of any program that displays album covers without art, right?
not necessarily, the s^1 player displays album art. but since it's not just the album art only to look for songs, it looks fine. it looks more like an addition to the names you can see the art too sort of thing.
I bought mine in Hong Kong, and unfortunately, the FM Transmitter is missing or disabled.
So I've been trying to change the product code using Nemesis, but I haven't had any luck with NSS recognizing my device. I keep getting errors when I try to scan or read. "Scan for product... Error!" or "Reading Values... Error!"
Does anybody have another suggestion of how to activate my FM Transmitter?
Other than that, the unit seems pretty good. It feels faster and more responsive that what it looked like in the videos I watched. But there are some things that need work - Wish the maps program let you pinch zoom.
And when looking at photos, switching from pinch-zoom to flick-to-the-next requires a couple taps in between, (understand the need to make sure one isn't trying to pan, but when fully zoomed out, it should know there is no pan and assume the gesture means 'next')
Haven't used the camera enough to comment.
The web browser is ok - the pinch zoom and the bigger screen make it so much easier to deal with than the last Nokia I used (ancient 6682).

you can try changing the PC with jaf
as for pinch to zoom in maps, install 3.06 beta. it works perfectly fine as it is
In case anybody else was wondering, a memory card reader with the USB OTG adapter works with the N8. So besides USB drives it can read all sorts of memory cards.
