With this online selection of replacement phone, it appears that porting our address books over from our old phones is a non-starter. Personally I'd prefer local folks to deal with. Is that a possibility before the window closes on phone selection?

Your address book shouldn't be a problem. One, if you have a smartphone, just sync it with a cloud service like Google. Two, if you don't, just take both phones into an AT&T store once you get your new one and I'd bet they'll take care of you. The local stores have better things to do (selling phones that earn commission and supporting things that need to be seen in person) than replacement phone orders. But guess what - I do know they're accepting replacement phone orders in store (kinda, they're getting - or maybe they now have - kiosks to let you pick your new phone)
Mark,
Thanks. Not sure where you are but I don't know of any "AT&T" stores around here in the greater Rapid City area. Just Alltel and Verizon. No indication that Alltel stores are acting as AT&T folks yet.
No smartphone (see my phone data in the upper right area of my posts here) and no Google services like Cloud or their email stuff.
The Alltel corporate stores in South Dakota are now owned/operated by AT&T. They do in fact have computers dedicated to pre-selecting your AT&T handset. They also have live AT&T handsets that you can touch & feel. The reps will be happy to assist you in selecting your replacement handsets.
Great. Guess I'll pop in tomorrow to see what they have to say.
Visited the AT&T / Alltel folks today and had all my questions answered.
Hmm...
I knew my local store had the AT&T computer system up for quite some time now. I didn't know they had AT&T phones, though. I haven't been in for a couple months. Time for a pitstop, I guess.
This confusion can easily be avoided if you pronounce the word intended aloud. If it has a voiced Z sound, then it’s “lose.” If it has a hissy S sound, then it’s “loose.” Here are examples of correct usage: “He tends to lose his keys.” “She lets her dog run loose.”
Loose
not rigidly fastened or securely attached
Lose
to miss from one's possession or from a customary or supposed place
Also, just because a word has an "s" at the end, doesn't mean it needs an apostrophe.
I found this article about the Rapid City conversion.

Saw that but thanks. Yeah there are other issues with coverage and fights over new tower locations, especially just SW of the city limits.
With my National Freedom 500 Plan plus 250 Anytime "Thank You" minutes for $40 (contract is almost 4 years old now), I hope the new network works out well so I can stay. Ordered a Samsung Rugby II (same as Verizon Samsung Convoy) to replace my old LG AX8600. I'll have 30 days to see how thing are after getting the phone they say should ship around 16 January. As with most things, time will tell.
Never mind.

The Unicel store in Hutchinson, MN now has AT&T handsets that you can touch & feel. However the store is not selling AT&T service yet. The handsets are just to help customers with preselection. Asked when the actual conversion would take place of Unicel and Verizon customers to AT&T would happen. Did not get a straight answer, but the loosey-goosey answer was Jan or Feb.
Will AlltelAT&T have HSPA running there in January?
Fiber backhaul for Verizon in Southern Illinois in 2013 - about time.
