Shaw may accelerate wireless service plans
JULY 1, 2010
Shaw Communications could be moving up its mobile wireless launch from late 2011 on increasingly competitive offerings from rival providers, executives said.
The Calgary-based company gave a short response Wednesday during a conference call when asked if it would be accelerating its mobile launch in certain markets next year.
"I don't know if we can really divulge that right now, but it's a good question," chief executive Jim Shaw said.
Since announcing its move into wireless, Telus -- Shaw's major competitor in the West -- has sliced the price of new package deals, while Rogers on Wednesday announced a new low-cost brand.
I wonder how many people will have signed up with Wind and Mobilicity before Shaw comes to market.
Maybe it might not be a bad thing as the Shaw/Mobilicity handsets will be Shaw compatible (after unlock) and there are no contracts. Switching should be very easy.
I heard rumors Shaw is waiting it out a bit...watch the chips fall...and since they are looking to start getting into wireless service might be looking at expanding through buying up some of the smaller players...like Wind or Mobilicity.
Mobilicity would be the ideal buy because their whole business is outsourced.
Shaw would get a network that is already build with customers and very small staff.
Mobilicity has the better network and fewer customers and would therefore be the cheaper buy.
