Shaw Selects Nokia Siemens As Wireless Network Equipment Provider
June 30, 2010
Shaw Communications has chosen the Finnish-German telecoms equipment manufacturer Nokia Siemens Networks (also called NSN) as the provider for radio access network and core equipment for its next-generation wireless network.
The equipment from NSN will be fully 3G and LTE capable, giving Shaw a variety of options to deliver broadband wireless services to customers using the Advanced Wireless Services (“AWS”) band, as well as future frequency bands. Shaw’s wireless network will be fully integrated into our extensive fibre optic network to enable the full potential of high-speed mobile applications to customers.”
Shaw has lined up significant investment plans for its wireless network – $100 million in year 2010 and little over $100 million in each of the following few years. As part of the contract, NSN will supply fully 3G and 4G super-fast LTE enabled network infrastructure to the Canadian carrier.
Mobilicity = Ericsson (outsourced network)
Public Mobile = ZTE Corp ($350M financing by Export-Import Bank of China
Wind Mobile = NSN, Huawei and Alcatel-Lucent
Videotron = NSN
Here is something that you will find quite impressive - Videotron is using NSN - look at what Videotron is capable of:
Videotron's mobile Internet will support data transfer speeds of up to 21 mbps over Videotron's 3G+ network, the fastest network around according to our current analyses. The network will eventually rev up to lightning-fast mobile speeds of up to 42 mbps, thanks to Dual-Carrier HSPA+ technology.
This NSN tech enables the ilico mobile TV service!
How much of a difference is their in the capabilities of the network equipment provided by the various companies?
They all build to the same standards do they not?
Is a Nokia network inherently better than a ZTE or Huawei or Alcatel-Lucent network?
Public Mobile says that their ZTE based network is LTE ready.
I see that Videotron provides much faster data speeds than does Mobilicity but is that a technology issue or a business decision?
