I have one, great device, nicest screen in the mobile industry right now IMHO.
I have an iPhone 4 and the Captivate, and I do prefer the Captivate because I like Android more so than iOS, plus as I said above, the screen is amazing on the Galaxy. The one thing that Android isn't too great at is battery life, mind you it's not horrible, but it's not as good as the iPhone.
Another plus on the Galaxy, it's light! Even though it's got a big screen, the device is still lighter than an iPhone 4, which I like cause putting the iPhone in a shirt pocket is cumbersome sometimes since it makes your shirt sag quite a bit, lol.
Thats soo good to hear, i'm excited. I thought no one had one yet because rogers was saying it is going to take a week to deliver. Did you order online? or is it an American company?

How would you rate the iPhone4 and the captivate, comparatively, in terms of call clarity, signal strength, voice and ringer volume, and browser performance?

I haven't actually made any phone calls on it as of yet (I don't use my phone as a phone too much), but browsing I prefer since I have other browsers running on the device, such as Dolphin HD. This isn't my first Android (had a Nexus One) and I can tell you the browsing experience on an Android is better than an iPhone for sure; a lot more options when it comes to browsing, at least I can go full screen on an Android.
Coming from a Nokia N97, this phone is a huge improvement. I won't lie. I miss the FM radio, front facing camera and the physical keyboard. Let alone the camera flash. However, the android experience is very compelling...the phone is lightning fast...tons of apps in the android market...however the battery life seems to be very weak...at least for now...perhaps after a few more battery kills it will be better...the screen is as fantastic as everyone has been raving about...i haven't rooted the phone or done anything to it since i am new to android phones...the gps is super fast to get a lock and the google maps navigation is solid to use while driving...picture and video quality is somewhat on the low side...lighting conditions have to be perfect for the pictures and videos to look good...internet browsing is uber fun...the browser is very fast...the speaker on the phone is pretty weak...and the call quality is somewhat worse then the nokia benchmark i am used to...
i am not quite sure what exactly i can gain from rooting the phone and flashing custom roms onto it yet since i haven't done much reading on the matter...one step at a time i guess...
That's what was confusing. You asked if anyone got the Captivate from Rogers. If you get a phone from Rogers, you didn't get it from an American company.
I have an Captivate and Xperia X10a and let me tell you the screen is gorgeous on this device, it's so much better... I compared it to my iPod Touch 3G as well and it blows it away. Dunno about comparing to the iPhone 4 as that has IPS technology which also is great on the eyes.
The Captivate is fast and can use the 2.1 Apps right now....
Though there are some things I miss from the Xperia X10a.
The tactile buttons that light up aren't as desirable as the physical buttons on the X10
The ability to put in custom words into the dictionary for ex. (Futureshop, BestBuy... etc etc.)
The ability to disable Data access without disabling all wireless functions.
Wifi that works hassle free... I have to disable/enable Wifi after extended periods of time....
Some things I like over X10a
Drop dead Gorgeous screen..... so nice....
Swype is pre-installed, no need for hacks to get it like on the X10
Both USB tethering and broadcasting a Wifi access point are built into the OS. No need for PDAnet.
File manager software is included, again no other programs required. No need for ASTRO.
7 Home Screens on the Captivate vs 3 on the X10... though 2.1 will bring that to 5 for X10.
Angry Birds!!!! If you own an iOS device you know what this is...
Multi touch!! Though only really useful IMO for zooming.
