Rogers Samsung Captivate - Defective or not?

I am totally new to Android, came form iphone.

I am confused about certain things

    1) When the screen goes black ( stand by mode ) - I cannot have to tap the power buttom on the side for the screen to come back, I cannot tap the main screen
    2) Swipe to Unlock, I have to swipe it like 2-3 times before I get in, and the wole square box moves with it
    3) Back button - I am concerned with this, as I understand they have to be lit in order to be used, so if I am on a site, I see they go dim pretty fast and then seen if they are lit, the "back" button works on 2nd or 3rd try or sometimes on 1st try. I have to tap the screen, then hit back and it works 90% of the time or simply click the search on the side then hit back
Is this how Android works? kindly advice so I can call rogers and exchange as this seems to be a problem with the rest too

Yes, I have to press the powerbutton to wake it up. I guess it's one way of improving battery life. You can change the timeout (blackout) setting.

The whole box does move, but I only have to swipe it once from left to right. Maybe your technique is wrong.

The back button is almost always available. The lights turn off to save battery power.

Be careful when typing in your wifi key. It's easy to mess up passwords.

When you launch your browser it goes to http://rogers.mobi When on wifi the network cannot confirm your identity so you will see this message. Just go to another site.

This is dumb. I don't understand why the whole box needs to move lol. Quite peculiar frankly. Is this an Android thing? Gotta be. When you root, can you change this so that only the slider moves....like on an iPhone ?

It's a Samsung thing. My wife has SE X10 with Eclair and only the slider moves when the phone is unlocked.

I bought WIDGET LOCKER as a lockscreen replacement. It offers different lockscreen styles. I'm using the iPhone one, though I don't like iPhone much. Then I have custom sliders for the Dialer (phone) and Messaging. Lets me call from the lockscreen by sliding the slider. Definitely a must have app for my Captivate

FYI - If there is something you don't like about Android, you can change it.

A good starting point if you are new:

    1. Download ADW Launcher or Launcher Pro and replace your twlauncher. It will speed up your phone greatly.

    2. The buttons on the bottom of your phone (Like the back button) work even when they aren't illuminated. As long as the phone is ON and not locked, they should work. Not physically seeing them lit up is only annoying for a day or two, then you know where they are without looking.
