Not up here L.A./RIV/SB/OC, SD, SF/SJ/Oak and Sac would be considered urban, outside of there CA is mostly rural to VERY rural, and many times very isolated and remote. Man, what am I going to do with you bro? LOL

In all honesty, AT&T has the same speeds throughout Austin, San Antonio, and Houston as well.

Which is why it crashed 2x at SxSW in Austin. AT&T got it right this last year when it added the portable cell COWs to handle crowds.

Because att just has that many users. Would of happened to T-Mobile too if they had that many users concentrated.

Exactly. When T-Mobile has 90+ million customers, we'll see how their network holds up during major events.

AT&T still has failed to invest in their network, and now is furiously trying to make up for lost time. Whether you love or hate them, Verizon planned ahead and has invested in their network, and it shows. In my area, Verizon and T-Mobile have outspent AT&T by a huge margin, times have sure changed since Edge Wireless was around.

Edit-AT&T does have 3G in select areas here, like Ukiah, but even that was put up by Edge Wireless, T-Mobile has yet to get 3G here. One nice thing is that T-Mobile roams in-market onto AT&T in bad spots here, AT&T cannot do the same onto T-Mobile.

No they just didn't invest in your area, they have invested hugely in my area lol. Hell just the past few weeks I've seen them adding more 3G capacity to a few towers around here. Also it looks like there will be a lot of 3G being turned up in the next few months.

We all know that ilvla2's world consists of only Mendocino (and maybe Lake) county. Anyone who doesn't invest in Mendocino/Lake counties "has failed to invest in their network". Anyone who does invest in Mendocino/Lake counties "planned ahead and has invested in their network", regardless of how crappy said network might be outside of Mendocino/Lake counties.

With more spectrum and money, low overage thresholds on new customers and a "HSPA+" network reaching 250 million customers at the end of business TODAY.. (baloney) the network should be able to handle what they have. 90 million AT&T customers at one major event has to be one major event. I didn't even know all of AT&T's 90 million customers all lived in the same city and went to the same events. It's really hard to believe that all 90 million of them are in an urban city. It's just one excuse after another.

Coverage will expand to 100 million LTE pops for the first half of 2013, with the second half of 2013 expanding to 200 million POPs covered. Release 10 LTE (2×10, 2×20) will be better performing than all other competitors.

Bingo.. especially when here in Phoenix, the Data network cannot seem to handle the load of a normal day OK.. hell the EDGE on my unlocked iPhone is more responsive with T-Mobile than at&t 3G!

T-Mobile has how many smartphone data user's and AT&T has how many? One cell site can only handle so many user's, and when the majority of the people at the event are USING AT&T, self admittedly the iPhone which the good majority of user's use AT&T who own the iPhone then of course it will fail. You probably have never seen internal regional op's stat's from AT&T's regional NOC, if you have then you would be shocked by the number of user's that can be on one AT&T tower and then you may understand why it would fail.

Think of AT&T and T-Mobile as WiFi router's, if T-Mobile's Wifi router has a 10mb connection with only 4 people using it, the speed's will still be decent, now we will say for the same area and AT&T tower with 20mb connection but 25 people using it, of course the channels and backhaul are going to fill up very quickly.

T-Mobile is the only carrier that works great here during football games, AL vs. Aurburn, guess why? Because the majority of the people you see in the stadium uses AT&T or Verizon, police use Nextel. Those networks will be the most crowded, less than you think of T-Mobile's customer's are actually heavy intensive data user's unlike AT&T's vast majority that are.

And may I add very good job on gripping your friend's iPhone in a basement to get that screenshot

If that event had been filled with the same amount of customer's but on T-Mobile it would have failed miserably too. Spectrum mean's nothing when the tower's overloaded, and if you don't realize which you should AT&T WORKED JUST FINE AFTER THE CROWD OF AT&T iPHONE USERS LEFT

Major media outlet's report there were THOUSANDS of iPhones there, that's probably 1/3 of T-Mobile's entire data user's right there, I seriously doubt T-Mobile had a serious load like AT&T.

AND if you FAIL to remember this year, T-Mobile was the one playing catchup... So don't even go there, at least AT&T was prepared for this years event.

SXSW cellphone service scorecard: AT&T big winner, T-Mobile the loser
    March 16, 2010 | 4:19 pm

The South by Southwest Interactive conference draws thousands of geeks every year who converge on Austin, Texas, to discuss technology, the Internet and the next big thing. For attendees, the challenge is to meet interesting people and discover new trends and websites. For cellular carriers, it's keeping their networks alive.

Conference patrons live on the cutting edge. Look around, and you'd have a trying time finding someone whose face isn't buried in a smart phone -- whether "engrossed" in conversation, lounging at a cafe or walking to the next bar.

How are the big four carriers holding up? We took an informal poll of dozens of smart-phone users around downtown Austin and at the festival's epicenter -- the convention center.

AT&T: Still Apple's exclusive U.S. carrier for the iPhone, there's no doubt that the telecom was getting hammered in Austin this week. IPhones are everywhere, as techies send text messages, access Twitter, check into Foursquare and search for barbecue joints on Yelp.com.

As the largest carrier of smart phones for years, AT&T has seen what it's like when a ton of them show up in the same city. At last year's SXSW, AT&T's cell service failed in a major way.

This year, however, the telecom was prepared. "We put a lot of effort into preparing our network for the volume of mobile broadband traffic we knew we'd see at SXSW, and we're pleased to see those efforts paying off," AT&T spokeswoman Katie Keating wrote in an e-mail.

The network's voice and 3G Internet channels have been excellent throughout the conference. My iPhone has worked almost flawlessly, and others have reported the same.

Verizon: The nation's largest carrier only recently ramped up its offering of compelling smart phones. The Droid and Droid Eris have only been around for a few months, and the BlackBerry phones it sells pale in comparison to AT&T.

We spotted the occasional Droid around the convention center, and Verizon subscribers say coverage has been great.

Sprint: With the only 4G network in Austin, Sprint was the go-to for many speed-hungry geeks. Although free Wi-Fi was plentiful, some bloggers opted for the MiFi device, which can produce Internet for a computer, phone or iPod Touch practically anywhere. Aside from a few issues in the morning, Sprint users reported solid service.

T-Mobile: Until Tuesday, Google only offered its Nexus One phone for T-Mobile. It's a favorite among many geeks -- though not selling well overall. Those, coupled with plenty of BlackBerries and older Android phones, were clearly too much for the network.

Subscribers in Austin reported spotty service all weekend, culminating in major problems Sunday that made calling almost impossible.

"T-Mobile already has very strong network coverage in the Austin metropolitan area," T-Mobile spokeswoman Krista Berlincourt wrote in an e-mail. Additionally, she noted, the telecom added "several radios" and other enhancements to local sites as well as optimized coverage inside the convention center.

Yeah, but do you really know who you're dealing with here, T-Mobile? These people can't even use the restroom without checking their e-mail.
