Grrrr... Gingerbread coming soon and I'm stuck with Eclair?

Link to story on Android Police about Eric Schmidt at Web 2.0 announcing Gingerbread to be released in the "coming weeks".

I can't take this much more... I want Froyo on my Milestone now! If I snap and buy a different phone to stay with the software curve it won't be another Motorola (mostly out of spite... I actually like the Milestone a lot).

I can tell you with some authority that 2.1 on the Milestone is better than 2.2 on the Droid. There's still quite a few issues in 2.2 that make it a step backwards in many ways, stability being the big one. Flash is handy, but not worth the tradeoff yet, IMHO.

Well, "this winter" doesn't start until Dec. 21st and could extend as far as March 2011 so that sounds the same as "Q1 2011" to me. Also, there's one very important difference between the Droid and the Milestone... for some reason the Droid is highly customizable with ROM's that are relatively easy to apply. The Milestone has it's kernel locked down which makes applying true ROM mods more than a little difficult. These are the two major reasons I'm even considering a different phone.

This is exactly what I'm worried about. I think my Milestone has had two official software upgrades in the 8 months I've owned it because of bad / buggy software. I'm super concerned that Motorola will push out a buggy rom for 2.2 and then end all support for the phone given the fact that its over a year old now. That would be a huge tease. Definitely my last Motorola for sure. My next phone will be something that is easy to root and install custom roms too so I'm no longer dependent on carriers.

As was mentioned, if you're rooted you can get custom roms on your phone, even with the locked boot loader. Check XDA. It's SLIGHTLY more complicated, but if you can't handle that, you shouldn't be flashing anything to your phone anyways.
