I'm sure there will be a way to upgrade, but whether or not VZW pushes Gingerbread to the original Droid remains unknown. It may very well be that Gingerbread would make a Droid 1 grind to a halt - we'll just have to wait and see.

Here's how one article describes the bad news:

    Her we go:

Android 3.0 Gingerbread will be released in mid- October (around 15 -16th), 2010. First handsets shipping in November/December – for the Holiday Season.
Minimum hardware requirements for Android 3.0 devices are: 1GHZ CPU, 512MB or RAM, displays from 3.5” and higher. (We all, of course, heard that Android handsets with 2GHz CPU’s are coming)
New 1280×760 resolution available for the devices with displays of 4” and higher. (Anyone thinking about Android tablets now? )
Completely revamped user interface. If you want to get a feeling of what Android 3.0 Gingerbread UX is like, check out the Gallery App on Nexus One. The same overall feel, light animated transitions, etc. Natively, through all the UI.
Android’s split into 2 branches becomes official. 3.0 for top of the line/high end devices. Cheap, low-end mass market handsets will keep Android 2.1/2.2

But as one commenter of the same article pointed out:

This Gingerbread and many other articles are widely accepted as twoddle: -

We ran a story recently detailing the possible changes to Android in the new Gingerbread version. It was based on several strong leaks and detailed the end of custom UI's, minimum hardware specs and much more. These have now been cast into doubt as Dan Morrill, Open Source and Compatibility Tech Lead for Android, stating that ..

"I love it when people just make stuff up and report it as news."

He links to the original unwiredview article and also says that, "You shouldn't believe everything you read" plus "I can make up crap too". So, perhaps this isn't the end of the HTC Sense UI after all? We'll wait to see what the official specs are.

    This is also interesting:
