I think I found a way not to get charged when sending text messages to international numbers (but you get charged like for a regular Canadian text). I am using an HSPA phone, I'm not sure if it would work with CDMA since it involves using a GSM standard.
The way I do it is by entering the number using the GSM standard: +[Country Code][Number]. Basically 011 (North American way) or 00 (European way) is replaced by +, the rest stays the same.
By using this format it seems I am not charged the extra 25c for an international text, I have been checking my online account and all texts are treated as regular texts.
Happy texting.

Interesting - I find it surprising that Telus would allow such an obvious and common-place loophole. I'm on Rogers now but did have Telus with HSPA and always used the + method for all numbers, always. Didn't seem to give me any breaks back then.

I used to be on the Blackberry Student $35 plan which only included Social Networking, yet somehow I got unlimited free data. I used hundreds over hundreds of mb per month, and wasn't charged a penny. Somehow I got lucky, just like the OP.

and many of this social plan give you unlimited data on hspa ! ...
I can't use the social networking to use unlimited data anymore since moving to hspa ...does anyone know how to get this back? I had it on my old bb cdma network.

I had it with my 8330 curve for over a year before my phone broke. When I bought the 9300, it moved me over to the HSPA network so they started charging me for data. I tried multiple ways to get it free again, but no go. So I moved over to the Blackberry voice and data 50 plan.

It seems they have fixed the bog, no more free international texting . Is the trick still working for anyone or sending texts to a specific country ?

Claudiu,
On a related note, are you able to text ALL networks in Romania? I can only send and receive reliably from Orange, but can only send to Vodafone (cannot receive). Interesting enough, while I was on Rogers (using the same number) I could send and receive from Vodafone.
I think you had an old thread somewhere else about issue texting from Telus to Vodafone Ro, did you ever found a solution?
Yeap, you are right, you can only send to Vodafone (cannot receive). I was roaming in Romania at some point with a Telus SIM and the roaming network was Vodafone RO and guess what, the SMS issue was still present. I called them and they noted the problem; it's been more than a month and the issue is still there. Sadly, if the blame is on Vadafone RO, I don't think they will fix it soon (if they will ever fix it). But I am curious, have you ever tested with another operator that shares the Telus HSPA network (like Bell or Virgin), is the issue still present?
