The sad state of LTE smartphones, if you ask me, is they still aren't ready for prime time. They all have serious short-comings, be it battery life, or poor radio performance or something else. I don't say that from experience since I can't be buying new phones every month, but I have followed most phone launches here on the forums and right after each one there's usually a sea of complaints about them all and then it dies down as people either settle with the fact that they'll always be plugged into a wall, or the performance isn't the greatest anywhere/everywhere they want to be and they're ultimately okay with that.
That's kinda my impression, is all. My Xoom tablet works great, always. But it also has a massive surface area for a nice roomy antenna and a 6500 mAh internal battery to back up the radio, so it doesn't likely pull any attenuation or other trickery to reduce power usage and that's my guess on why it always works so good.
If the radio chip makers can get low power models out the door and finally get the antenna design optimized then there's room for LTE to really shake things up.
