If the test isn't showing LTE then it's on 3G.
Here are some 3G (EHRPD) speeds I got today. Quite happy, I had no reason to switch my phone into 4G mode.
Connection Type: Ehrpd
Server: Chicago, IL
Download: 2655 kbps
Upload: 862 kbps
Ping: 89 ms

Ping: 98 ms
I wish VZ 3G was always like this.
4G Tests will say LTE, like this:
Connection Type: Lte
Server: Chicago, IL
Download: 42405 kbps
Upload: 16217 kbps
Ping: 45 ms
Keep in mind there are some areas that don't hit 40, 50, 60+ mbps all the time, Verizon states their LTE should always be at least 6mbps though, which is still plenty fast for a phone.

i also thought i was on 3g beacause of the slow speeds and very high ping but i downloaded a app that lets me switch to 2g,3g and LTE...i switch it to 3g and did a test and got 0.61 down and 0.78 up with ping of 170 2nd test 0.87 down and 0.96 up with ping of 143 SAME SPEEDS AS SPRINT...i then switch it to LTE and still got the 2-3megs down with a ping of 150....would really love to see 40megs down and a ping of 50 or below
EDIT: on the 3G test it shows LTE and on the 4G test it shows Ehrpd?????????????
i just got a new SIM card today, maybe i have a bad SIM? also have very high pings of 150
You are using a Thunderbolt. What did you expect? It is the worst out of the 4G phones. Also, your phone being rooted may cause a problem.
v Speed Test with my Motorola Droid in AL. Droid Does (and so Does Verizon).
