You have to buy unsubsidized for them to unlock. Or have completed a 3 year term. Or pay ECF for termination.
What do you guys think, will cancelling a contract (paying the ECF) that the iPhone was purchaed on qualify for "having finished the commitment period" ?

    Ya that should qualify it.

I wonder if Rogers would honour that and send the request for unlock though lol.

Well they would have to, they'd be charging $50 for it. Can't bill you for a service you do not receive right?

They are shysters though no doubt. Too bad an unlock won't let us bring our iPhones to Wind

lol. I wonder though, if you cancel the line and pay the ECF, how would they bill you if you're no longer a customer? I guess you'll screw up the initial requirement about having an account in good standing.

They are apparently unlocking because of this.

Called and confimed, yes they do unlock iPhones. Fido unlocking their full line-up of phones too.

Now if only ALL carriers will follow suit, AND scrap the unlock fee.

PRIVATE MEMBERS BILL HELPS FORCE ROGERS TO UNLOCK CELL PHONES

Hyer, Thibeault call on Bell and Telus to follow suit and start unlocking all cell phones

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
    DECEMBER 16, 2010

OTTAWA – Today, Canadian consumers are celebrating a major reversal of policy on the part of wireless giant Rogers Communications. In response to public pressure built in support of NDP MP Bruce Hyer’s (Thunder Bay-Superior North) Private Member’s Bill, C-560 the Cell Phone Freedom Act, the company is now offering to remove the network locks placed on their customer’s phones.

Network locks restrict cell phones to work only on the network of the carrier selling them. Until today, Canada was the only developed country where the standard industry practice of wireless carriers was to lock all mobile phones sold.

“Network locks limit consumer choice and are bad for market competition,” said Hyer, who introduced the bill in June. “Wireless customers can’t just go to another carrier with their phones and use them on another network, even if they’re not on contract. These locks are a way to digitally chain customers to one company, and they artificially restrict competition.

“That’s why I’m very happy Rogers has agreed to take the first steps to comply with the Cell Phone Freedom Act. Even though they’re charging a $50 fee, this is a first step to increasing options for consumers and competition,” added Hyer.

Together, Bell, Telus and Rogers control 96% of the Canadian wireless market. While the Rogers policy change is a partial victory, New Democrats say much more is yet to be done.

“I’m calling on Telus and Bell to catch up with their competition - and the rest of the world,” said New Democrat Consumer Protection Critic Glenn Thibeault (Sudbury). “They need to start unlocking the full range of their customer’s handsets without barriers like fees – customers should have full use of hardware that already own.”

The federal government needs to do more to prevent predatory and anti-competitive practices on the part of Canada’s major telecommunications companies, said Hyer. “This is just a first step in modernizing Canadian telecoms and ensuring fair pricing and services for all Canadians.”

I'm not questioning the credibility of any posters. I just thought that unlocking an Iphone is alot more complicated than the rest of the devices.

Anyways, my apologies if I hurt anyones feelings....
