Question How to transfer files from laptop to phone without internet/wifi

I have a Pantech Jest. It's a prepaid Verizon phone, doesn't have as many features as a lot of other phones. I also have a Samsung N130 netbook. Most of the time, I'll be in the rural area with no internet. I would like to send files to my phone, without or internet. (specifically music because that's the only way I can use it as a ringtone, to receive it to my phone and save it as a ringtone.) Is there a way?

If this helps, my phone has bluetooth, but my netbook doesn't (netbook is a smaller laptop just incase you didn't know, lol) and my phone can't make a wifi signal from cell phone towers like a lot of phones can

I bought a usb bluetooth adapter for my netbook, It'll be here next week. Will this let me send files to my phone from my computer (or from my phone to my computer)? And if so, what software do I need? Anything good and free? I'm open to suggestions for different ways and different software to use.

Thanks and let me know if there is anything I can do. Thanks again

The Pantech Jest supports USB mass storage mode. You should be able to just connect your phone to the netbook with a USB data cable, put the phone in USB storage mode and copy your files over.

    Question No folder for ringtones

The Pantech Jest doesn't make a folder for ringtones when you format the memory card when you put it in the phone. When I put the micro sd card in, it made folders for pictures, music, but no ringtone folder. If I can find a way to get ringtones to the memory card without sending them to the phone, and they will appear in my ringtone folder, that would be good.

I have tried putting an mp3 of a ringtone in the sounds folder, and going into the sounds folder and selecting set as ringtone, but that didn't work. It pretended it did, and I tried with other different ringtones. Still didn't work. The only way I was able to get a ringtone on my phone and to be able to use it when I get a call or text, I had to get someone to send it to me, but it costs per text and since I have prepaid, I can't afford that.

How do I send music files (my 20 second ringtones) from my computer to my phone from either bluetooth or usb? There has to be a way.

The Jest supports file transfer in it's Bluetooth profile stack and assuming the BT dongle you're buying does also then you should be able to transfer ringtones to your phone via Bluetooth. I just tried it with my LG enV2 and it was simple to send a ringtone from my computer to the MySounds folder on my cell phone and also the other direction. You shouldn't need any extra software.

I have Bluetooth built into my laptop and I've never used a BT dongle before. But I've read that some of the cheaper ones don't have many common profiles. Do you know for sure that the Bluetooth adapter you bought supports file transfer?

Barring bluetooth file transfer, you can use bitpim. I haven't used it under Windows, but under Linux at least, using a USB cable you can point bitpim to the serial port-style device it creates (usually /dev/ttySB0). Using bluetooth I had a serial port-style device too that I could point bitpim at.

Well, perhaps I'm splitting hairs, but the bluetooth dongle doesn't support or not support profiles. The thing is, Windows has absolutely zero bluetooth support on it's own, so it's the bluetooth software bundled with the dongle that supports or doesn't support profiles. Plug it into Mac or Linux and even the cheapest dongle supports absolutely everything.

    Question

I have bitpim, and I have tried it with my phone, but no matter how many settings I try, it won't work. Is there any specific settings I can use for my Pantech Jest (model txt8040) on the bitpim software, or any alternatives to bitpim that support transferring media such as ringtones, photos, music, contacts, etc? Just as long as it has ringtones, I'll be ok. Thanks

AFAIK, Pantech devices are not supported by BitPim.

True. This is what I was referring to:
    From Wikipedia:
Older Bluetooth dongles, however, have limited capabilities, offering only the Bluetooth Enumerator and a less-powerful Bluetooth Radio incarnation. Such devices can link computers with Bluetooth with a distance of 100 meters, but they do not offer much in the way of services that modern adapters do.

I just found out I already have bluetooth in this netbook, (and I just bought a bluetooth usb adapter, oh well, I could need it for my other computers, lol) how do I transfer files from my netbook to my phone, and how does it work? I just want to send a 20 second ringtone and I want my phone to receive it and be able to save it as a ringtone. Is there a way to do this?

    ***EDIT***

I found out I don't have bluetooth in my computer. A website review of the netbook said it did. I don't know if it does or not, but the Samsung website for my N130 netbook has a bluetooth driver, but when I installed it, it didn't detect anything. Other websites said it doesn't have bluetooth, so I'm glad I ordered a bluetooth adapter. I need to know two things:

Like mentioned above, I want to know how sending files from computer to a phone through bluetooth works. Does it come like a text message? Or is it like sending a file and you choose a folder it goes to. I would think it would work like this: you send a music clip from the computer to the phone, and you save it as a ringtone, and then you can use it as a ringtone. How does this work?

And the other thing I need to know is, is there any software that is compatible that lets me send ringtones to my Pantech Jest (txt8040) through the data cable? I know of bitpim, but it doesn't support my phone. This would be the easiest way, but I just can't find any program that will do this.

    Thanks for helping me.

Lightbulb I think I found the solution!

With my Pantech Jest, and probably a lot of other phones, like above, the Pantech Crux, I was trying to figure it out by looking on my phone, and this is how you do it:

1.) Put a memory card (micro sd (or if your phone has internal memory, use that) in the phone, and enable mass storage on the phone.

2.) Find the "My Sounds" folder and put your 20 second music clips/ringtones in there in mp3 format.

3.) Unplug the phone and navigate to "My Sounds" in the phones menu.

4.) Find the ringtone you put in the "My Sounds" folder and find the "set as" option and choose it. A menu will pop up.

5.) On my phone, the Pantech Jest, and maybe on the Pantech Crux and other phones, you'll see (in the set as menu) ringtone and alert sounds.

6.) choose ringtone to set the music file to play when someone calls you and then go to alert sounds and you can choose from txt message, pic/video/voice message and voicemail

And that's how you do it on this phone and other ones!

Have fun. Thanks for the help!
