I think you might have misunderstood my initial question. Yes I am am aware that it needs to be jailbroken to run the apps and in my case needs to be done tethered after any device reboot.
In this case I do run the JB before installing TetherMe as Cydia requires a reboot upon its install completion. This is where I then download and install TetherMe but when it reboots it gets stuck in a reboot loop at the Apple logo.
Then you need to run your jailbreak program again. Anytime your phone reboots you will need to run jailbreak program again.
What jailbreak program are you using?? You could try holding home and power button at same time. It should pop up something like connect to iTunes... From ther you could follow your specific jailbreak instructions, or put in dfu mode and try your jailbreak. It really gonna depend on what program you are using. Sorry I can't be more helpful.
redsn0w 0.9.6rc8 is what I am using for the JB. I think I tried getting it to go into recovery mode or DFU but I will try again right now.
Is what I am having to do normal behavior in order to get TetherMe installed? It doesn't seem like it should be. And by the way, thank you for your assistance. Its been pretty difficult in getting a response to my issue and I have yet to see a documented case of this on any message boards.
I setup mms on my 3G and had no problems but it was not tethered jailbreak either. I used to have tethered JB on my itouch and it kinda sucked really. If it was me, and if possible I would downgrade to an OS that can be untethered.
I've having problems with my iPhone 3GS keeping signal. It keeps going to "Searching..." or "No Network" with the ST sim card inserted. This is not a jail broken phone and I shattered the screen so I'm hoping it's not just seriously broken.
Any ideas?
Much appreciated in advance.

The gist of it is that many jailbroken apps install MobileSubstrate, which I believe is what causes the phone to refuse to boot with a tethered jailbreak. You have to put your phone back into DFU mode (with USB connected, hold down both home and power until it shuts off, then wait about 5 "Mississippi seconds" and release power but continue holding home until you hear the USB chime on your computer), re-run Redsn0w and choose "Just Boot Tethered".
You will have to do this every single time you reboot. This is why a tethered jailbreak is such a pain.
can this also be done with Motorola Droid X on Straight Talk?
First turn off 3G and retry the SIM again.
Then, check to see if the phone works with non-ST SIMs. If the iPhone works with any other compatible SIM, then recheck your ST SIM on other at&t/unlocked phones. If the iPhone doesn't pick up signal with ANY compatible SIM, then your phone needs a restore or repair (probably the latter considering the shattered screen). The Droid X is a Verizon phone, so no it can't be used on ST. The similar GSM-version Milestone X, which isn't really offered anywhere, would.
The Droid Global phones Verizon carries might work as long as they have GSM/WCDMA 850 & 1900 and are unlocked, but you won't get to use Verizon towers on ST (the CDMA part cannot be activated on ST at all).

I tried this today. Wife was more than willing to try it too because even if we don't end up liking the result on our respective iPhone 3Gs, and aging iPhone 3G, the Nokia E71's are nicely spec'ed back up phones and the plan prices are just insane for getting unlimited smartphone use.
The results were outstanding. I activated the Nokia E71 after porting my number over from Tmobile. I was able to do it all online. The E71 came online about four hours later. Then I slipped the SIM into the iPhone. The SIM was pretty hard to take out of the E71. The tape trick was what finally got it out.
I put it in the iPhone, used the second method to create the carrier file and followed all the other steps. The phone works perfectly, gets MMS messages, and I even tried a little (but not enough to really get noticed) bluetooth tethering just to make sure it works.
Two new iPhones with unlimited everything or even attempting to approximate on AT&T or Verizon would be about $180+. This deal is a steal and works perfectly so far. If it lasts three months the phones are essentially free and any unlocking, reselling or anything else that can happen later is just gravy at that point. If it never happens then you'll still be ahead loads of money.

MrRomeo, thanks for all of the fabulous detailed instructions! My wife and I have been using the iPhone 4 on Straight Talk for the last few days. It was so EASY with those instructions.
Google Voice sure makes it easy to switch phones. I only wish Google Voice app worked a bit better on the iPhone but it's good enough to get by. Hopefully this gets improved in the next update.
Both you and your wife are very welcome. Make sure you install MY3G app on both of your phones from Cydia so you can facetime from anywhere, it costs a couple of bucks but its worth it!
Hey guys.. SO MAJOR problem.. I can not get the data to work on my Iphone $ with Straight Talk. I used the first method as the link to the second no longer works. Can someone please help?? I installed the config file from link one, and still says no subscription to cellular data error message. I rebooted the phone 10 times and nothing.. installed it twice and nothing.
