I don't think there are any free tethering apps for iPhone. The ones I know about is tetherme, mywi, and pdanet. Of the 3 pdanet is supposedly the front runner because it has ability to hide your cloak your data so it doesn't look so obvious that you are tethering. People supposedly had good success with it on AT&T.

But ST is a whole other kinda animal. One slip up with them and your goose is cooked. I'd advise not tethering.

o.k., so I just downloaded TetherME, went in and changed the settings EXACTLY as listed, & it seems the iphone sends picture messages just as it should, but when I send a picture message to it, it comes in as a link that you have to click on, them the picture will open in the browser. Is there a way to fix this? thanks again all.

I just want to be completely clear here and make sure I interpreted the wiki correctly before I pay a ton of money on an iPhone for my wife.

    1. The iPhone 4S is the only model that you can actually fully activate with data and SMS without jail breaking(t-mobile SIM method). This will be for my wife so I'm avoiding anything that's jailbreaky or too hackish. I'm also curious why this is the case, and why an iPhone 4 with iOS 5 wouldn't work. since I would assume those setting would be mostly the same in software.

    2. A regular AT&T branded iPhone will work even still locked to AT&T.

    3. As long as you buy the SIM from the Straight Talk SIM store, you don't need the Nokia method anymore, just buy the SIM(as long as it's the AT&T version).

    4. Other than Visual Voicemail, there are not other real caveats.

I think you got it summarized properly for the most part if you want to use that method.

On the wiki I am the one who wrote the section on the tmobile sim trick. I did not discover it I merely documented it extensively. It 100% guranteed to work on a non jailbroken 4S unlocked, that is what I originally tested it on personally.

Since I wrote the part on the wiki. Other users from various threads have come forward and share new info.

The first info is that the sim trick does in fact work on factory locked att non jailbroken 4S. Everything will work fully including mms.

The second info is that sprint sim from a 4S also works in triggering to menu. So possibly other foreign sims will work. But I do not put it on the wiki because no one shared yet.

Regarding the iPhone 4, I simply don't have enough info to tell if it works. It mah in fact work I dunno.

Other reasonable people that have been helping me says most likely won't work. The claim is the 4S is perhaps kinda different and more hungry for sims.

I updated the wiki as best as could to include some of these new findings.

If it works on 4,3GS stock, locked or unlocked let me know.

Thanks. When/if I do get her the iPhone, it'll probably be a 4S any way. Also, has anyone tried this on a new AT&T locked phone that hasn't been used on AT&T before? Will the phone need to be activated on AT&T first?

I restored an AT&T iPhone to factory condition, which makes it no different than a never-activated AT&T iPhone. I was able to put in the ST SIM and have it work.

Okay here is a situation that is quite the conundrum....

I am using the E71 sim swap on an iPhone 3G. Before I got the 3G I tested the sim swap in a friends 3GS that he isnt using anymore. No contract or anything, just laying around sometimes uses it as an iTouch. It worked so I got my 3G.

Well tonight my brother calls me saying that he tried texting me but someone else answered. After a lot of head scratching we figured out that it was the 3gs that I tested the swap on. My friend had it on wifi so somehow, with no sim my brothers iphone4 was using imessage to text "me" on the 3gs. I call my friend and had him remove the straight talk apn hoping that would fix it...nope!

Any clue what the heck is going on and how to fix it????? I am at a complete loss right now..

I could not get the TMobi SIM swap trick to work on my iPhone 4 previously activated on AT&T (and currently running on Red Pocket). The TMobi SIM was previously activated and used in an iPhone 3G, but no longer has service. The TMobi SIM was recognized by the iPhone with a "No Service" message in the upper left corner.

You have to remove the Apple ID from the iCloud settings. The carrier is not involved with iMessage sending or receiving unless you are using cellular data with an activated SIM card. The iPod Touch can send and receive iMessages via Wi-Fi if iCloud is set up on it.

    Guessing this was to me...

He uses the iCloud stuff to keep it synced with his 4S and iPad2, so he doesnt want to remove that phone from the cloud settings. Would doing it once and adding it back work? Should he restore a backup? Assuming he hasnt made a new one since I tried the swap on his phone.

This is quite a famous, recent and serious bug made by apple. They will fix it eventually.

But for now read this and try to do what they say. I think they are saying go back to the other device and put the sim in toggle iMessage on and off which unregisters the device.

I'm interested in if their method fixes your issue do keep us posted.

I'm sorry that it doesn't work on the 4. So I guess that all but confirms it as a method only for 4S.

    Working on iPhone 4

Heres my experience so far. I did the Nokia method, and it's working on my iPhone 4. First time I cut my sim small and so I had to have them send me a new one (too 2.5 weeks and their customer service SUCKS let me repeat, they have the worst customer service ever). Ok, well my iPhone 4 iOS 5 is running perfectly ( data,SMS,MMS, calling) speeds are pretty good as well. I'm sure the new micro sims would work just as well.

He did that and seems too be working. I am now green on his 4S where last night I was blue. Havent had my brother text yet, but I believe that did the trick! Thanks
