Straight talk has nothing to do with battery drainage....as it is "atat" the is not unlocked for other carriers. Downloangrading should be done with Tiny Umbrella not cydia

1 - reboot your phone. Gotta redo the jailbreak? You're tethered. Generally it's the newest FW jailbreaks that have this annoyance.

2 - Change the APN in the settings>general>network>cellular data network field, then back out one menu scroll down and enable tethering.

3 - 4.2.1 still? Greenpoison is the way to go.

4 - http://www.saurik.com/id/12 will give you an overview.

5 - settings>general>about - modem firmware. The baseband is not recoverable with SHSH blobs, that is mainly for unlocking though, to use ST no unlock is needed.

Ok I have no problem taking the time to help someone new to all of this. However, if the information is in this thread’s first page tutorial then I will just redirect you back there but I know that it didn’t go into a great amount of detail about jailbreak (though it might have had a link to somewhere that did).

    1. If you can power off your phone and turn it back on and still open cydia then you are on an untethered jailbreak.

    2. When you open cydia on the far right side of the bottom row of navigation icons you will see the magnifying glass which is the search icon. Tap that and then in the search bar type in tetherme and it will display in your search. Then install tetherme; it will cost your 4.99. The rest of the stuff for changing the APN settings once tetherme is installed is shown in detail in the first page tutorial.

    3. If you are Jailbroken on 4.2.1 then you are more than likely untethered.

    4. The SHSH blob has to do with the digital signature from apple that is required when installing an iOS on your iphone. Apple usually only signs their current version of iOS, so if you want to downgrade you need to have your digital signature (unique for each device) backedup and saved so if you ever want to downgrade your iOS you with have the signature (SHSH blobs). When you open Cydia I believe it does save your SHSH blobs, However I use a piece of software called tinyumbrella. It is very popular and is what most people that jailbreak use to backup their SHSH blobs and restore unsigned iOS versions. If you use tinyumbrella then you don’t have to worry about changing the host file on your computer tinyumbrella does all of that stuff for you. Tinyumbrella will save our SHSH blogs locally to your PC and you can also set it up to save them to Cydia as well.

    5. Baseband information is in the Settings app  General  About  then scroll down to 3 items from the bottom of the page and it will say Modem Firmware (xx.xx.xx). The only way to retain your baseband that I know is when you do a upgrade make sure that you do it using sn0wbreeze (which is a jailbreaking tool) if you upgrade your iOS any other way your baseband will be upgraded and there is currently no way to downgrade basebands once you have upgraded it. There is currently only one work around if you rely on unlocking for say use on t-mobile. Snowbreeze will allow you to upgrade your baseband to 06.15.00 which is an ipad baseband which is unlockable but that will disable the gps functionality on your phone and that baseband will drain your battery faster. But if you just want to do straight talk you don’t have to worry about unlocking because straight talk works off of AT&T’s network anyway.

There are tons of tutorials out there about everything I just talked about. All you have to do is a google and/or youtube search on then and you will get tons of stuff back. The official site for tinyumbrella is http://thefirmwareumbrella.blogspot.com/ and the site for sn0wbreeze is http://ih8sn0w.com.

If this doesn’t help you then you should just give up or get someone to do it for you (please reference old internet video title “Internet Helpdesk” by three dead trolls)

    Hey guys,
I have taken part in using an iphone on straighttalk and am loving it so far. Thanks to everyones advice on here.

I do have one problem. I have everything working on a 3gs running 4.1 and jailbroken with limera1n.
Everything works except im not getting 3g in areas where i should very well be getting 3g. Edge is terrible and not acceptable.
I have tried all three methods on page 1. The zip file, the unlockit method and the tetherme APN editing piece.

Im positive my settings match what is on the first page. But still getting edge. What am I missing here guys? Any help is much appreciated.

This is kind of an obvious one be have you went under the network settings and made sure the 3G data togle is switched on?

Also if you are hitting T-Mobile Towers it will only be edge.

Mhowerton79 and milkbone - Thank You Once Again

    Hi again,
I think you and milkbone covered everything I was asking for. I have gone through each and every post on this thread about a week or so ago before I began posting questions.

For someone like me who never did anything more than use a phone, some of the nomenclatures were not familiar and consequently I ended up asking some basic questions which could be simplistic for a lot of experts here including like you. I just want you to know I'm so grateful for a few of you who are helping me out.

I think with the information you have shared so far, I don't expect to have many issues to start using the iphone.I intend to study your response shortly but from what I have seen so far it's one of the best written responses from a newbie's point of view. Thank you once again

So, does anyone have any suggestions to why my jailbroken 3gs running 4.1 is not getting 3g in 3g areas?

Do you have friends on AT&T who can test their SIM in your phone? (Also, the coverage map isn't always correct)

Am I missing something? In order to get an iphone 4 to work on straighttalk, you have to
    1) Buy 200 dollar phone that you will never use and can't sell
    2) Buy an iphone, which costs ~ $400 used @ ebay
    3) enroll in a $45 a month plan..

Doing the math, you'd end up paying 70 dollars a month in 24 months, all this while
    1) using a used Iphone 4
    2) using it in a non kosher way
    3) the whole thing could blow up in your face.

It doesn't seem like huge saving when you add in all the risk and uncertainty. Am I missing something? If this has been brought up before, forgive me. I just can't read a 100 page thread.

This thread is directed towards those who already have an iPhone, I hope. It makes no financial sense to purchase an expensive phone to use in the place of another phone you have purchased. It is like buying a car to fit the rim you bought.

I already had mine, and was on a T-Mobile UL talk/text/web plan that was priced at $55 per month but actually came out higher (~$70) for less coverage and slower internet. I didn't do the math but I'm happy and that's priceless to me. I needed a backup phone too, my other one is a Motorola V635. It's nice, but in the event that I would need to use a different phone the E71 is much nicer. Plus if I really wanted to I would unlock it and sell it overseas.

Well in your case, you come out ahead in my hypothetical 24 month scenario. So go you for saving 400 dollars in 24 months.
