What is the latest IOS and baseband version that can be jailbroke/unlocked. Want to make sure I don't purchase a used iPhone 4 that I can't unlock.

With the recent unlocking of the 4S, i don't think there are any that can't be unlocked/jailbroken with the possible exception of those that preceded the iPhone 3. However, there may be some issues with carrier-locked iPhones and different modem firmwares. Someone more knowledgeable than me will have to comment.

I am going to be using on Straight Talk so I know it needs to be ATT but didn't know if ATT phones were locked or if activating the ST phone as in the HoFo and then just using the SIM card in the iPhone will work no matter what version baseband you have...

WORD OF CAUTION About "DataMan" app... I just got done setting my iPhone 4s to run on ST and everything worked great, but I installed the DataMan app to monitor my usage as was recommended by lots of people.

I noticed my battery was dying at a much faster rate than my old iPhone 4 and could not figure out why until i noticed in my "Usage" that the "Usage" and "Stand By" time were always the same. Normally stand by should be more than usage. I had a hunch DataMan app was the cause. I deleted the app and now my battery life problem is fixed. I was starting to think my 4s was defective!

Yah man if you are a normal kind of iOS user you don't need data monitoring apps. Just look at the built in tracking in the cellular network data section buried in the settings app. I barely pay attention to it because after a couple days I realized that my usage patterns are normal and I won't run into the limits quoted by the nice guys in this and other threads.

By normal user I don't mean shut your phone off and don't use it. I assure you I use my device a lot every day and have the 3g up a lot and still the data things I do does not bring me into direct conflict with the limits.

It's something each person has to figure out on there own. But if you are the type that seek to replace your cable broadband, tv/DVR and theater experience, and dl pirated flics by sharing your connection all from the convenience of your little handheld gadget then this type of plan may not work out for yah.

I use a free iPhone app called "Data Usage" and have not noticed any excessive battery drain.

<off topic> Despite what Apple recommends (full discharge every month), recent research seems to indicate that Li-Ion batteries like to be maintained at full charge at all times. I heard this on Leo LaPorte's "The tech guy" radio show as the latest from Steve Gibson, the inventor of SpinRite and considered a pretty smart guy. We can argue the best way to maintain batteries of different chemistry all day, I suggest rather than doing that here simply do your own research.<end off topic>.

Goto Walmart (And only Walmart!!! NOT EBAY, NOT CRAIGLIST!!!! WALMART!!!!!)and buy either a Nokia E71 or Nokia 6790 phone and a $45 unlimited card. Bring it home and activate it. (other phones will not work!!! only the e71 and 6790 comes with a compatible sim) Before you activate, make sure the sim card from either the E71 or 6790 says TF64PSIMC4 on it, if its missing the P in the part number, it will not work!
What are the chances of getting the correct SIM card that has the P in it when ordering a refurbished 6790 from ST? Don't want to order and not get the right one and have to send back. None of my local walmarts carry the 6790 anymore.

Also, it says it doesn't have to be unlocked but in the guide it says to go to unlockit to get cellular service working. All help and answers appreciated. I have an iPhone 4 32GB I can get for $300 local that has been jailbroken. Don't know if that is a fair price or not.

    Thanks,

If the SIM that comes with the 6790 does not contain the P, you will never get the phone activated. It HAS to have the unlocked SIM to work. They would send you the correct P SIM.

Going to unlocking.co.nz will not unlock your iPhone. It will allow you to change the APN settings. You don't need an unlocked iPhone for this system to work.

Tracfancier...to understand what you are saying is that I have ZERO chance of not getting to correct SIM?

Thanks...My best bet is to order it through them since cost of phone/card is same price of just phone on Walmart.com

If some incompetant puts the wrong SIM in the box, they will FedX the correct one free to you very quickly. So only a slight delay in geting up and running.
