New to Android, have a T-Mo G2 on the way, couple questions.

As the title says, I have a G2 on the way, and I'm pretty excited about it. I love these forums, and have been using them for a long time (Don't let my current account fool you. For whatever reason, I can't get into my actual account, which I've had for a number of years), but everything I see is about the Desire Z specifically.

I want to follow the directions given here:

Is there anything extra I need to know/do if I'm going to be working on a T-Mobile branded G2, or will the procedure be the same as the Desire Z?

Also, the guide says to use this rom: [ROM] RUU_Vision_HTC_WWE_1.34.405.5_Radio_12.28b.60.140e _26.03.02.26_M, but the link to it says that if use to update a G2, it'll brick it.

Are there any clean (unbranded/unbloated) G2 ROMs available?

I am no expert but I will say, the guide you want to follow is good.

I have a Bell Desire Z, I have tried flashing modaco rom and it was good, except the fact that it comes with HTC Sense UI, if you are a fan of Sense, it is a good option. If you want a clean OS well, i have tried Cyanogen ROM and that also is a considerable option, just that it comes with Cyanogen tweaks and if you do so, dont forget to install Google Apps before start using your new rom.

BTW, this phone is rocking. Good luck.

Yeah, I'm totally gonna follow the guide you linked to. Already had it bookmarked. As the guide says, it lets you keep your stock kernel.

Also, what IS senseUI? How does it differ from the standard Android interface? Any idea what the T-Mo G2 comes with?

I was also looking at Cyanogen. Thing is, I want to play around with the most basic version of Android I can find, and THEN start playing around with different ROMs, and try to find something I like. What I really want to do is debrand my G2, and get as close to a basic install of Android as I can on it, and just play around with it to see how I like it. Any idea how I might accomplish that? The only thing I know for sure is that I don't want to keep whatever it ships with.

No worries, these forums are here to help each other. Glad i was able to. Neways, I am not too sure if there is any stock ROM available which is just a FROYO ROM straight from Google without any customization.

I have read it somewhere that you run .exe file on your computer and fetch the ROM from there, but I was not too confident following the guide(i will see if i can find the link), CyanogenMod is one of the stable and most stock looking ROMs available.

I have CyanogenMod rom installed currently, it seems like its the ROM from T-Mobile only (as it has the wi-fi calling option which doesn't work for obvious reasons as wi-fi calling is an exclusive service from T-Mobile and I am with Rogers), besides this feature it is just as stock as the one from Google, except it is a customized rom which means it comes with cyanogenmod rom customization option. I think this is the most suitable rom as to what you are looking for.

HTC Sense UI is a layer on top of the Google ROM which comes with a bunch of graphical differences and some tweaks here and there. Modaco ROMS come with HTC Sense UI.

As far as I know, T-Mobile doesn't come with any modifications and is a similar experience to the Stock ROM.

Yeah, the more I read up on it, the more it's looking like Cyanogen is the way to go.

It would appear that the G2 doesn't come with Sense, and people are saying that it's pretty close to stock Android. That makes me happy. but there's still the small matter of the T-Mobile stuff that can't just be uninstalled. Any ideas for how to deal with that stuff?

Also, I have a friend that jumped on the bandwagon with the original Droid, and he's happy with Sapphire. I tried searching for it, but couldn't find any information beyond people thinking that the HTC Sapphire was going to be the G2. Do you have any experience with the Sapphire ROM, or is that just for the Droid?

You got it... so far out of all the roms i have tried, cyanogenmod looks like the closest one to stock rom.

I have read and done some more research, seems G2 is a clean stock version with some T-Mobile tweaks and added apps. As far as I know, one can't really uninstall a preloaded apps provided by Cell Providers. Modding is the way to go...

I haven't done any research for stuff outside of Desire / DZ and hence don't know if it is exclusively for Droid. If you want to know which roms are available (may not be 100% list though) check out the list of available roms at http://theunlockr.com/downloads/andr.../android-roms/
