GV Connect + Google Voice + Talkatone = Phone on iPad

Last week, I found out that you can use the two apps GV Connect and Talkatone to make calls on your iPad. GV Connect uses your Google Voice # and Talkatone uses Google Talk to allow you to use data to make phone calls. Works pretty good. Thought I would give you the heads up.
Put your document shredding to good use. Recycle your shreds from your paper shredder, there are a variety of ways. Make crafts from the paper shreds, use it for shipping, or in the compost pile....

Actually, you can make the calls directly from Talkatone without the GV connect app. It works really well. If you pick up the official Google voice app you can also send and receive SMS messages using your google voice number and it supports push notifications! There is a thread in the AT&T forum with more details here:

I was wondering the same thing, why mention GV Connect at all, as it isn't required. I actually prefer GV Mobile+ because its interface is a little nicer.

robgmartin: any problem recently with push notifications of new messages with the official app? Mine seems to longer be working.

nope, no issues at all. the official app is pushing properly. I currently have it set up with SMS GV extension so that all incoming and outgoing SMS's go through the native SMS app.

I can't do the SMS forwarding, as I am in Canada and GV won't yet allow Canadian numbers to be added as forwarding numbers.

I've been doing some testing today. I tested sending SMS and leaving voice mail on my GV number. No notifications. I logged out of the GV app, signed in again and tested again. Notifications for both SMS and voice mail. That lasted about 5 minutes. Now SMS get alerts but VM do not.

Weird. If this keeps up I might have to give up on GV as my VVM replacement.

weird. SMS GV extension will still work for you. If you are jailbroken, install it in cydia. All SMS messages will go through the regular SMS account and use only data. Check it out here:

    http://smsgvextension.appspot.com/

Also, if you have your SMS and voicemail notifications forwarded to your email address and have push mail set up you can use the email receive function instead of the GV app push notifications. This will work whether the official app is working or not. If you are continuing to have issues check out GVMax:

    www.gvmax.com

set up gvmax and prowl and it will push all of the notifications to your phone. when the notification pops up in prowl you can tap view and it will open the GV app of your choice. Additionally, you can turn on forwarding alerts to your Gtalk account (i think it is enabled by default) and all incoming SMS's will show up in talkatone as Gtalk messages. Once they are there you can continue the conversations just as you would chat with a friend over IM.

edit: obviously if you aren't jailbroken and don't want to be...skip the sms gv extension and move to gvmax.

So do you get the same alerts for incoming calls, and text messages just like if you had normal phone service? What about voicemails? Does it work with the native visual voicemail interface?

I've found that for some reason, I need to also have the google voice app installed in order to have the SMS GV Extension to work, without it, it will send, but it won't receive

I don't know about the ios talkatone app, but with the android one, it supports sms as well, so you would not "need" the official app (there is one now? last i heard, apple blocked it?)

Either way, I didn't find that part all too reliable (sms/gtalk) and I already had the stock google apps for those tasks so I was sick of the double notifications. I don't use talkatone anymore so I don't know how much it improved.
