Serious Issue with the Desire Z

    Hi Guys,

First off, I am using the Desire Z unlocked on Telus. I do not have my phone rooted, nor unbranded. It is completely stock (Bell Branded) only modification was the unlock via unlock code. I purchased via a friend, who gave me the original purchase receipt (for warranty purposes). However he has since left for Kingston now that the holidays are over.

The problem I am experiencing is via my calls. About 75% of my calls experience random mutes, where the other person can hear me, but I hear just silence. Sometimes it will happen soon after a call, sometimes 20 minutes into a call, completely random timing and duration. Most of the times, the other person will hang up thinking it is their phone and call me back again, only to have the same problem again...

It gets worse though. About 25% of the time, people on the other end have told me via text, since they can't hear me, that my sound is coming very scrambled. Like an alien frequency jumbled up. I can't explain the sound but I've heard it and it sounds really weird. Obviously, they hang up, and call back but the same sound remains.

My only temporary solution to these problems is to restart my phone. I don't know how long I will be able to talk on the phone again before one of these two problems hit me again, at which point I have to do another reset.

I find myself resetting the phone about 5 times a day.

My hope is that this is a software issue, and that an update will fix this scrambing/muting out problem. I wanted to know if anyone else had any sort of issue with this, or what I can do to resolve this.

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

I agree with Hjlow, but I would do it otherwise, I would first root it, do a nandroid backup and install a custom rom, if still getting a problem, i would get an exchange for the phone, since you have the receipt, it should not be a problem getting an exchange.

BTW have try doing factory restore? May be it will help... it won't lock your phone again so don't worry.

....Without going calls all week. Today the phone randomly reset it self and was stuck on the HTC logo at bootup for about 30 mins. After it finally loaded up, it worked just fine for about another hour, before freezing up again and then reseting itself. Now it will not boot up at all....

I'm on the phone with HTC now.... Googling the issue , seems Im not alone with this problem.

doesn't rooting void the warranty? i think you should call htc/whatever store your friend bought it from like demonbarf

i think that alien sound though is a network issue, my phone is perfectly fine but sometimes it sounds like my friends are aliens and they tell me sometimes i sound like an alien

It's not rooting. I've never rooted my handset. As we speak my device is off for repair or replacement at HTC, it will be at least another week before it comes back. Don't know if I'll ever find out the problem, but the device was dead. Nothing seemed to work. Bell rep said it wasn't a common problem and that I was the first he knew of with the issue.

Hopefully it will come back and that will be the end of it, but in the back of my mind I'm still worried. If you search a little bit, some people are having similar issues. I guess I have to wait and see.

You can always flash it with a stock HTC RUU and that will get rid of all the Bell stuff and put stock HTC firmware on it, I did it with mine and have had no problems at all with it, I also flashed my Desire and got rid of the Telus firmware and it also has had no problems at all.

Ya I'd love too. Except for the fact the phone wont power up at all. Kinda hard to flash when its dead.

YUP, waiting for HTC to send it back, repaired or replaced. Funny it bricked from HTC'S stocked ROM.

Google the issues, seems the DESIRE and DESIRE Z and G2 have all had complaints about this problem, but I wouldn't say it's widespread - more like a hit or miss issue with the handsets.

    Update: One Month Later...

So guys, thanks for the feedback thus far; just an update for those wondering.

I did not do anything. On its own, somehow, the phone started to function normally again. It went from me having to restart it 5 times a day, to 3, to 1 to now barely once every few days (which I like to do regardless to keep memory fresh). I can't really tell you why or how it managed to fix itself - and other than my opinion that it got "used" to the network, I really don't have a clue. All I know is that its working fine now and the phone is actually an amazing device - now that it works as intended.

For anyone still in the same position as me, especially MC Armani, just sit tight and let it correct itself...I know there is no real logic to what I am saying, and can't really prove it'll do anything, but I personally noticed the clarity improving daily.

I still have my warranty of course, but no need to exercise it just yet.

    Cheers!

    Hi All,

Just thought I'd add to the fun... My wife has a DZ with Bell - completely stock, running unlocked on Bell. We experienced the issue intermittently, regardless of whether the DZ makes or receives the call. On the DZ you can hear the other caller perfectly, but the other caller hears only the "alien" sound, an electronic garbled sound, from the start to the end of the call.

Usually lasts a couple of minutes while we frantically hang-up on each other and try to call back. This occurs if the "other" phone is a landline or mobile.

Replaced DZ #1 on saturday at local Best Buy under replacement plan, sprung for new screen protector, and walked out thinking it was resolved.

Then first call Monday morning; the sound is back. Now we're looking at a roll of the dice on a second replacement, or a roll of the dice on each call we make with the DZ...
