Porting a number from another carrier to add a new line, a new contract needed?

My main line is with another carrier but I want to port that number to AT&T to add a new line to my account but I have my own phone, do I need to sign a new contract? My other number with AT&T is month to month now and my plan is after I port the other number from the other carrier, I will cancel this number with AT&T.
    Thanks for all input,

If you provide your own equipment you can request a non-contract activation as long as you use it as an individual line. Not sure if you can on a Family Talk plan though. Somebody else will confirm either way I am certain.
If I'm annoyed and you're annoyed, does that make us a paranoid ??

That's exactly what I plan to do: add another line and use it as an individual line (sorry that I didn't provide more details at first.) Thanks,

You don't need to sign a contract. You are still required to carry any features that phone needs, such as internet.
My statements and opinions do not reflect those of my employer, AT&T Mobility. This is disclosed per FTC regulation.

the easiest way is just to get the new line with a random phone number (month to month)...then once its all set up and ready...call in and port

just a suggestion to not cause confusion

Yeah, I think this is a good idea (and probably easier) to call to request a non-contract activation but I'll try to talk to them first to see if I can port my number and they can activate my new line without a contract.
    Thanks,
