OFFICIAL iOS 4.3 release thread - keep all discussion here!
One of the (few) surprises during yesterday’s big announcement was that Verizon iPhones will be getting personal hotspots. They won’t be alone.
According to BGR, it has been “confirmed” that the personal hotspot feature will be rolled out to all iPhones regardless of carrier with iOS 4.3. (Naturally, the carrier is going to come into play somehow, so AT&T users might not be able to take advantage of this feature so easily.)
Expected to drop in March, the OS version will be 8F5148b and the baseband will be 04.08.00. Users will be able to connect up to five devices to the hotspot via Wi-Fi and possibly Bluetooth. Of course, if you don’t have an unlimited (or at least 2GB) data plan, this will surely eat up your data usage allotment quickly.
I guess that if you pay for the AT&T iPhone tethering option, you'll be able to do it via hotspot. Right now, you can only tether your non-jailbroken iPHone via USB or Bluetooth, and the system must recognise that you've paid for the tethering option.
AT&T might charge for it. But i dont care, i use native tethering on my iphone (jailbroken) but do not pay for tethering on my plan so this will be easily bypassed once iOS 4.3 is released.
I kinda agree with you but Im sure that VZW will not charge for that. But we all know how AT&T is they will charge
I believe it was mentioned elsewhere that it's the same thing as what's offered to other VZW smartphones, i.e. the $20 tethering add-on. So it probably won't be free for either carrier (officially).
Like what linuXshock said, I'm sure that the hotspost option will be unofficially supported on all carriers/plans with appropriate ComCenter/Carrier Bundle patchworks.

I am a little confused. My Verizon phone was able to roam on GSM because they used TDMA. Tell it was shutdown. The phone recognizes it as Analog. If PCS has TDMA, It could be technically be used on GSM.

Yes, you will have to have the tethering option to use it on AT&T. So, it really doesn't make sense to let 5 people use your phone as a connection unless you LOVE paying overage charges every month.
**Tethering and/or Mobile Hotspots require a Data Plan with Tethering and an AT&T-approved tethering or Mobile Hotspot device. Data used by devices connected to a tethering device or Mobile Hotspot is deducted from the data allowance included in your Data Plan with Tethering, in addition to the data your device consumes. Data Plans with Tethering are not unlimited and significant charges may be incurred if the included data allowance is exceeded. Performance may vary depending on the number of devices connected, connection strength, proximity, radio wave interference, and other factors. AT&T does not guarantee privacy of communications when using tethering or Mobile Hotspots and you are responsible for establishing passwords to allow others to connect through tethering or Mobile Hotspots. Tethering and Mobile Hotspot use on an unauthorized device or by unapproved sources or not on the tethering data plan are prohibited. For complete terms and conditions regarding AT&T's Data Services, see att.com/termsofservice.
SO if I am understanding this correctly (it's early and I haven't had my coffee), I'm still better off keeping my phone jailbroken with my unlimited data plan? I have no need to allow others to use my phone. I am still on 4.0 and was hoping to update, but I guess not.
