A friend of mine wanted a new cell but didn't wanna any 3G phones because she doesn't wanna pay extra to use internet. She has regular non-3G internet as part of her plan, and that's the way she likes it. So, what is the best phone that doesn't use 3G, that you can think of?
The previous phone was HTC Touch (I think), it was a Windows phone with a touch screen that was pressure sensitive. I've seen her use internet with it plenty of times, not DATA though. Any phone you would recommend that uses regular internet instead of Data?

The Touch is a data phone, but it just happens to be the only data phone that was allowed to use the mobile browsing plan versus a regular data plan. Whatever dumbphone she ends up getting, nothing will replicate the experience on the Touch, as it has full data capability for email, gps, browsing and various 3rd party apps.
My New Rogers Plan
- $35 Unlimited Local Calling Plan
- $30 6GB Data
- $10 Retention Value Pack - Free (2500 texts, CID, VM)
- 100 mins LD - Free
- $67 + tax
Bite me Telus.
3G is the generation of the wireless system. HSPA is the 3rd generation of GSM. What you want is a dumbphone, no 3g a as smartphone. The best hspa dumbphone is the samsung impact. However it is nowhere as good as the htc touch. The htc touch was the only smartphone to work with the unlimited browser feature. If you want the feature of a smartphone buy one and get a data plan. If you only want to do some light browsing go with a dumphone.

What about the Nokia 7230?

Sounds like a half decent dumbphone, but it will be a huge step down from the Touch when it comes to features, apps, etc. Any dumbphone will be a step down from an actual smartphone, but as long as your friend understands this...Originally Posted by kenio8185
There is rumors/posts of people using the Palm Pre with the UMB. I am thinking of trying it, but I haven't yet. I might just scrounge up another HTC Touch and put android on it again, my last one died. Now I pay $70 for my Desire Z a month with 6GB data, way too much.
Get her another HTC Touch. You can install the latest Android on it, and she'll be very happy with it. No other non-smartphone is even in the same league as the Touch.
Folks,
I envy all you younger generations who have quite the different definitions on "smartphone" and "dumb phone" asides the distinction between the marketing jargons of "3G" and "3G+" in the context of Bell (i.e. CDMA2000/EVDO vs UMTS/HSPA+) and in the context of usage patterns (i.e. voice-centric 2G era with features like SMS/MMS/WAP vs the data-centric 3G era with computer-like features such as streaming media via mobile broadband internet access).
Nokia 7230, 6350 are two FINE DUMB PHONES available at Bell in terms of the CORE FUNDAMENTALS (i.e. RF performance, Audio quality, Voice calls management) of a MOBILE PHONE should possess. If one wants more "features" beyond just making phone calls, then to consider the "FEATURE PHONES" (i.e. for the marketing sake, a notch down from the SMARTPHONE) like Samsung Gravity Touch.

I'm not buying it for her. No way I'd buy a phone for her unless I'd be getting some. She's getting a new phone and is just curious what other phone out there that's better then her touch but uses Mobile browser instead of data.
Anyways, now she figures she's gonna go for the touch. She said she wants to pay full price for it because she doesn't wanna be tied down to a contract. If she buys it off bell, contractless, will she still be able to use mobile browser on it instead of data? (I know, it seems like a stupid question, even as I'm typing it out, but I just have to be sure).
Ok, let's say they did sell it, would it be fine if she bought it full price?
Also, another possible option (not sure if it would actually work out though) is if maybe Telus would sell it, if she bought it there, unlocked it, would it work with her plan? (didn't ask about Rogers because I'm almost 100% sure they don't sell HTC phones).
