Rogers Samsung Captivate 2.2 Mobile AP Fix

For those having a problem with no more Mobile AP after the 2.2 Update.

I get an error saying "This account not setup for tethering, Please call Rogers to have it activated" Not so easy, since I am on Telus.

You have to be rooted and use Terminal Emulator.

    Steps...

    su
    mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblk3 /system
    rm /system/app/TetheringManagerRogers1126.apk

That is supposedly a new file added in the 2.2 update that is used to check if your Rogers account has the tethering option. Sort of screws things up if you are not on Rogers.

Deleting the file removed the check, and the Mobile AP works once again.

I have only tested it with 1 device, but it does work, so should work with the regular total.

Mine works fine without doing any of this.
What size data bucket do you have?

He's on Telus, so it that check shouldn't occur with him.

Ahh, that explains things, Rogers and Samsung don't really have to care if it causes issues for other carriers, since the phone is certified for Rogers only.

You might find this to be an easier method than described by the original poster:

#1. Root your phone (Superoneclick works like a charm)

#2. Buy the "Root Explorer" app. (It's only 3 or so bucks)

#3. Using "Root Explorer", browse to the "System" folder, then the "App" folder.

#4. Long press on TetheringManagerRogers1126.apk, and rename it the same name only .bak

    #5. Power cycle your phone.

While you're in there, feel free to remove the Rogers bloatware. Just be careful you know what you're renaming before you do.

I renamed the following .apk files to .bak:

    Rogers bloatware
    SamsungCaptivate-Ringbacks.apk
    SamsungCaptivate-Shop.apk
    SamsungCaptivate-RODM-v2-FINAL.apk
    SamsungCaptivate-urMusic.apk

    Samsung bloatware
    SamsungApps.apk

    Other
    bell.apk (Removes Kobo)

Look it up before you rename it to .bak .. there is some important stuff in there you don't want to disable. You can physically delete the files, but I prefer to rename them in case I ever want them back on the phone.

Remember to reboot when complete. The apps will be gone.

I posted a response here after doing some googling on the issue. Please read an respond:

Is rooting the only way to get mobile ap and USB tethering to work? This z4root, I can temporarily root to delete the file, then go back? Does it work on 2.2?

I too have problems with mobile AP even though I am with Rogers with 6GB data plan. Mobile AP works sometimes but it will get disconnected every 1-2 hours. And sometimes, it will say I am not eligible for mobile AP but if I try a few more times, it will work.

I also find that internet.com is the only APN that works.. if i use the rogers-core-appl1.apn, then i can't enable mobile AP at all... very annoying...

I guess rooting and deleting the apk would be my only option .. sigh..

    z4root won't work on 2.2

    Superoneclick will.

You don't need to delete the file, just rename the .apk to .bak instead. The phone won't load or use it, and you can always restore it if you have to by simply renaming it.

Don't worry about rooting. At the worst when you go to do another update, Samsung will push a default image to your phone and factory default it. It'll then go through the upgrade process normally.

I had to do that going from 2.1 to 2.2. I wrote down my contacts and a list of free Applications I use (The paid apps are saved by the market), then let Kies factory default the phone and upgrade it.

As soon as it was done, I rooted it again and threw my stuff back on.

Rooting gives you the ability to do so much more with the phone. Once you start using the phone more in a rooted state, you'll be thankful you did it.

As an update, I was able to root with super one click. Very fast and easy. I got the root explorer and renamed the Tether file and a few other rogers ones. Liking root so far, few issues with calls dropping, but may just be a weak signal. I got the root backup app for backing up all my apps and settings. Oh yeah and tethering works like a charm now

I rooted my Captivate, downloaded Root Explorer, went into system/app and tried to rename .apk to bak. but it shows that the file is read-only and can't be renamed. what should i do?

There's a little button on the top right of your screen that probably reads: "R/O". Click on it and it should change to "R/W". Try again.

Thanks for the information. I followed your instructions and voila - I now have Mobile AP.
BTW Superoneclick does work like a charm!
Once again, thanks for the info.

    Weird...

Very useful thread, it seemed like this was exactly my problem and the resolution was easy. Rooted my phone, went to the directory and oddly, the file does not exist.

Now what? AP still does not work.
