Wondering if anyone here has one of these and could let me know how they work. I'm interested in knowing about the phone part of it. It says you can plug a landline phone into it to use on the 3g+ network. Can you plug a cordless base into it and still use cordless phones around the house or does it have to be one phone and limited to wherever the HUB might be?
What do you think of using this as a alternative to having a home phone and porting our home number to it if thats at all possible (which I heard it was) but im not sure.
Has anyone gotten any different plans than what is offered on the website for voice and data?
It takes a regular full size sim card.
You can plug any corded or cordless phone into it and it works pretty much like plugging it into the usual wall jack.
I find there is a small couple second delay when making a call... call quality of course depends on the signal of the unit. It also works as a wireless n router but use data accordingly.
I personally do not recommend using it as a home phone replacement. Land line is always more reliable.
We have been testing a hub for my wifes business. Works great so far. As the previous poster stated there is a small delay for the call to connect. Wifi works great. Land line works well as does the cordless. We are experimenting with the credit card billing right now.
tech support has been helpfull for questions but not to many techs are trained with the hub.
Added bonus. With the premium plan you get unimited long distance. the hub has no roaming charges so travelling with the hub makes calls free no matter where in canada you are.
Are the SIM cards locked to the Smart Hub IMEI or the SIM can work with regular mobile phone too? 90$ would be unlimited voice Canada wide , 3 GB of data, Voicemail 10, CID. Not bad.
Alright, I'll bite. Here's my own personal review of the Smart Hub and the plans etc.
The hub itself is very compact, easy to move around if need be. (Switching Atco trailers for example)
There is one LAN port, 2 Line inputs for phones. I don't believe you use the 2nd one, but the first, yes you can plug in a multiple handset phone system into it, and it'll work just fine.
The SIM Card does lock, and it is quite amazing how many people don't know that when you do a repair/swap, you have to use a new SIM Card. There is no way to reset it or 'unlock it'.
The Wireless in the actual Hub is not a cheap underpowered router. It has similar range to say a Linksys N Router Valet or something like that. It's pretty powerful. I haven't had any problems getting them to work in 2000sqft houses unless there are situations like every router that you want to avoid.
I'll just list some of them for ya.
Avoid putting the router in a room that is surrounded by Metal. The more metal between you and the router, the worse your signal is going to be. It may be great, but it could bounce around and fluctuate in power level all day long. Interrupting downloads/streaming/etc.
Do not put it in a furnace room unless it's well ventilated. The airflow is needed to cool the unit, and I've found that furnace rooms (on normal consumer routers) are usually enclosed and the airflow is so bad, that dust from the furnace just sticks to the unit and all the parts inside, increasing the likelihood of overheating. That and a furnace room is usually full of ducting cause that's where it all starts
Overall, as long as you get 3+ bars on an HSPA phone, the data will work great, but you will probably want 80%+ signal strength for the voice if you do both at the same time. It will get intensive on the unit, but it's like a cellphone. There is delay's when you call, and when you talk. Just don't treat it like a replacement for a land line. However, the Smart Hub with Voice Premium is actually a pretty good deal if you're mobile a lot, or work in construction/oil and gas.
A lot of the customers I have sold them to, love them out in the oil field. They are constantly switching trailers, and being able to just take their internet with them, have a phone, and no installations required means little to no downtime. Plus they work with Dual Band Boosters. So, they like to get a DC Power Supply in the trailer, and plug a car booster in, mount the antenna outside, and easy boosting.

Thanks all for your input
I have tried to use one as a replacement for a land line. When it worked it was ok but it was forever needing power off reset etc to be able to connect. Had it in for service at the store once. Eventually I managed to break the antenna and the local Telus dealer's Saturday staff was not helpful. Land line gets reinstalled Monday this week. Maybe my unit was a dud??? but I now own expensive ewaste :-(.
In terms of the byte traffic suggest using Propel accelerator. It routes most requests through their web site and does a great job of compression. Cuts my traffic by 70 to 80 percent. Unfortunately it does not always work, I suspect that their servers overload and things go south real fast, but most of the time it works. I pay for it on a yearly basis. I have an option set to get low quality images which really cuts traffic.
