That's a little bit of a rush to judgment don't you think?

Considering that the internal components are basically the same as the moment/intercept/transform and these phones performance is rather well known I don't think it is a rush judgment. This phone may work well for some people who don't use a smartphone to the maximum but anyone who expects this phone to be good is probably pushing it.

Unless you root the Intercept you will have issues like missing calls because of lag. I can understand Samsung wanting to make phones as cheap as possible but since they already know the shortcomings of this line of phones why not bump up the RAM to 512mb? That couldn't have increased the price too much and the performance benefit can be seen in phones like the Optimus line.

I think Samsung/boost/sprint chose to do to boost what they are doing to Virgin. Release any cheap Android, then a few months later release a much better Android to get people to re-buy, then a few months later release a more recent phone to still even more. They have already told Virgin customers the next Android will have 4.1" screen and 1ghz snapdragon. So it los like you guys have about a year before you get a really nice Android.

I think the phone will be a big hit, and the ones hating on it are just expecting gold from silver.

I agree it will be a big hit. That doesn't mean the phone will be good though. I think Sprint has just come up with a new business model for post paid that increases their profits. Release a rehashed Android to get the 1st round of sells, then release a better phone to get new customers and get as many re-buys as possible then a few months later do it again. This way they are selling most of their prepaid customers 2-3 new phones a year. If you must have an Android phone right now by all means get it. If you really want to get the most out of your prepaid savings though you should wait for the next Android they release.

There are plenty of high end Android phones out there if you want to spend some money and lock yourself into a contract.
Actually, you can activate almost any Verizon Droid on their prepaid service. But if you have alligator arms, it's not for you.

I agree with deathtrip that this phone is going to sell. 50.00 a month with shrinkage is unbeatable.
I didn't like the Optimus but I paid 149.99 for it new so I didn't expect much and that was re-affirmed. I bought (and it wasn't cheap) an ATRIX off Craigslist so I could go commitment free with AT&T. Yes, the phone blows the doors off of anything I have ever owned but @ 109.00 a month it's pricey.

When you start selling pre paid phones above a certain price point, they will sit on the shelf. I wonder what that price point is for the average "Joe Pre Paid User".

One thing that I like about it is that it's a pure Android phone something that I wish my ATRIX was.

I just think we need to give it a little time in the field before we bury it.

I think Sprint recognizes the need to supply decent entry level Android devices for it's pre-paid user but I don't think they want a constant upgrade cycle.

Sprint still looses money when it sells that VM Optimus for 149.99 or this new Prevail @ 179.99. Do they take a hit like on an EVO? Of course not but there is still a subsidy and last years technology or a rehashed model keeps that cost down.
I bought (and we pay for the service) an employee the VM Rumor2 for 49.99 delivered to my door for free right from Virgin. Sure, it's an antique but I can't imagine how long it's going to take on the 25.00 a month plan to make any profit for them.

If the phone sucks for you, which it might... it will be a big win for someone who wants it.

Get over it, stop being a troll and bashing something you haven't even seen yet. If you're too good for it, go else where and get something that is within your style and price.

For $180 out the door, it's a pretty sweet deal and will be just what a lot of people need, or want.

Actually the tech from this phone is over 2 years old though. I highly doubt Sprint loses a penny on the Optimus. They subsidize the post paid phones, not the prepaid. If they sell the Optimus V basically for $109 then there is no way the Prevail is worth, or costs to manufacture, $180.

IF they release another one. While the Prevail is definitely not the EVO, it was not designed to be a flagship device. The Prevail is just what Sprint wants to provide to prepaid subs, many of which will like the entry level android experience and some of which will be willing to opt for an EVO or other high end Android on a Post-paid agreement. If someone is willing to spend $179 for an entry level Boost Mobile phone, then ponying up $199 for an EVO or $149 for an EVO Shift might be a viable option too.

Since when is discussing a phone bashing? Considering I own the Intercept, which this phone appears to be based on, I would think my comments about this phone are pretty much in line with a discussion not a bashing. Why are you getting all defensive about a product that you have no vested interest in?

They still subsidize prepaid phones, it's just not at the same margin.

At the end of the day it's still an Android device for under 200.00 on an everything unlimited plan that will shrink to 35.00 a month.

I'm only saying that you're on here bashing the phone which is not meant to be some super phone such as the Atrix, or the Evo series. It's a CHEAP phone, which has a perfect price, and will be a huge upgrade for those who are still using the KRZR, or Seek, or any of the original Boost phones.

Boost isn't bringing out the Prevail to cater those who have Sprint phone's on Boost (legal or not). If you're new to the Android era, or the smartphone era, then it will fit you perfectly.

The Moment, Intercept and a few others work perfectly for a HUGE amount of people, which is why people still have, and still use them. You're not making comments about how it would work, or wouldn't work for you... you're saying how it's going to be junk in general and in reality, it won't be junk even if it has some small issues.

You have no solid evidence that the phone is based on the Intercept and are speculating and yes, you might be 100% correct.
Knowing the issues they had with the Intercept I would hope they made some adjustments or tweaks but we don't know.
Samsung is not LG so an Optimus to Prevail comparison is a bit speculative at this point.

I'm sure the reviews will be coming out shortly by Phonescoop, CNET, etc.

    Here's a quick review from phonescoop;

Boost Mobile introduced today what it calls its first CDMA smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy Prevail. The Prevail is a teensy little Android smartphone that is sure to entice the pre-paid crowd.

The Prevail is a small, slab-style phone, and has a smallish (3.2-inch) touch display. It's not the thinnest handset ever, but it is small enough that it is comfortable to use, hold, and carry about. The display isn't the largest or most pixel-dense, but it looks good for what it is.

The shape is somewhat boxy, but the soft-touch paint job really feels good in the hand. The corners are far from sharp, but there's still enough girth to let you know that it is there.

The controls along the edges -- volume toggle, power/lock key, etc., all worked well on the handful of units we tested at the event. They were easy to find and had good travel and feedback.

As for the user interface, the Prevail runs stock Android 2.2 Froyo. The Prevail runs an 800MHz processor, and felt very speedy. In the few moments that I spent playing with the phone, it felt zippy and fast, and I noticed no lag at all. All the typical user interface elements were there and worked flawlessly.

In sum, the Prevail is a decent little phone that is more than worth its $180 price tag and measly $50 voice/data plan. In other words, for the money, you can do a whole heckuva lot worse.
